not sure what these are

I'm not to sure what these are but they showed up about a week ago. They look to encapsulate any leftover food that sinks to the bottom.

very well could be rotting food, you never know what is going to grow on stuff like that. if you have excess food lying around your way over feeding for your fish and scavangers to handle.

also in the picture there appears to be a lot of detritus on the rock as well as algae growth starting. I would suggest increasing flow and maybe start thinking about enhancing clean up crew if tank levels are safe for adding them.

We just moved from Saint Louis to Cleveland about a week ago so I am waiting for my tank to level out, this pic came from in the sump not the main tank. I just added a decorator crab to the sump and I gave him a silverside and in less than 5 hours this was covering it. I have a few of them in the main tank but not this size, It seems as if these blew up right after we moved. I will give the sump a good cleaning now that everything is settling down from the move.

After some google searching I'm thinking maybe this is some form of a tunicate, I had some growing in st Louis on my rock work in the main tank. I'm wondering if maybe this is them replicating since they got stressed during the move. Maybe I'm way off but they don't seem to be causing any harm.

I'm more inclined to say its a bacterial bloom you disturbed a lot of stuff, it should level out. a tunicate is going to have a spout for siphoning and is not going to envelop food.

Thanks I will keep an eye on it, I was making a huge jump thinking it was a tunicate only because I have a large group growing in my main tank. my crab devoured the item in the picture so I will assume he is going to take care of the issue. Hope they are smart enough to not eat something that's bad for them.
