Thanks all. I decided to let it the heck go.....lesson learned, NEVER buy another fish from All-Fish Emporium. When I think back of the fish I've purchased from them, three of four actually died in QT. Only one ever survived. That alone should tell ya something about them. From now on I'll stick to my trusted LFS' and of course the gents online.
Spent this weekend laying floors. Go have a look at my "springtime" thread in the reef section to see the result!

OK, reset the clock. I went to my REAL LFS, found a Rainford's that's been there since Friday, and bagged him. Also cajoled the owner to give me a 48 hour guarantee, just in case he doesn't start eating (he has a slightly concave belly.)
He's in QT now. AND, I'm happy to say, already much more active and picking at the HA on the rock. Let's see if this one sticks.

question...Can a rainfords goby get along with a Hectors goby? Also folks...I need a PRETTY fish that I can keep with my seahorses to eat the extra food they waste. Once my refugium ages I can get a mandarin.

Flower, WWM mentions that only one should be kept in a tank, but anecdotal evidence suggests that these two MIGHT coexist peacefully. Probably you'd have a better chance if the newcomer was larger than the existing fish. My guess from a quick online search would be it's the luck of the draw.
And Lois, yes I'll get a picture tonight. He's actually picking at the algae on the rock, and sifting sand...he even found a buried mysis shrimp that I had missed in the tank cleaning (eww) that he started picking off of. I removed that after a few minutes though, because....eww. He's still got a concave belly, which is a small concern, but if I can get him eating meaty foods I won't be quite as fussed. I'll consider worming him if I don't see that belly fill out. I'm just happy because he's MUCH more active than the last one, which is a good indicator of health in and of itself.

Thanks Nova..My Hectors is small, maybe an inch. I don't think they get larger than 1.5...how large does a Rainford grow? The Hectors has been in there alone for quite some time...he may consider himself the king.

Rainford's don't get much bigger....2 inches or so max IIRC. Mine's about an inch long. and I'm durned proud of it.

New Rainfords:

You can see the slight concavity. It's lesser now than it was. He's been picking at the sand, the rock, and the occasional brine shrimp. Think he's going to be OK.....but I'm still keeping him in here for a good month to be sure.

LOL Thanks.
So far, so good. Still no active meat-eating, but he's picking at the sand and algae, and I think a couple shrimp from the sandbed. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
While we're at it, I should mention that we have a new addition to the household. Wife has been eyeing a shelter cat for a couple days (this is cat #2 now) and we brought her home tonight. Medium-hair mutt cat, predominately white with a few tan splotches and a grey half-mask face with green eyes. Just one more addition to the household...thank goodness the littler box is going out on the porch.

When she calms down and gets used to her new digs, I will. She's hanging out under the couch right now, and I want to leave her alone and get settled a bit. :)

She's all Cattitude.....but I actually like that in a cat. Besides, she's gonna have to hold her own against Big Momma in the house.....our orange female Peaches has her tail FIRMLY tied in a knot right now.
