nuked my tank :(

Well, i've been having issues with algae for a while since the baby was born. i've had a tiny bit of cyano in the sump, but it disappeared one day. when the new light was put on, cyano bloomed like mad :(
so i've been battling it, getting it off all the corals, etc. i finallly got so sick of it choaking my corals that i used red slime remover (had used it before no problem). this morning my pH was less than 7.2, my nassarius snails were croaking, my turbo's were barely hanging on, my sexy shrimp is dead, as is an urchin i've had since it was a hitcher two years ago. all my corals were closed and sliming up, one of my suns is completely skinless and receeded into it's skeleton. all the cyano's gone, but i think so is my reef :(
of course i just did a water change so my replacement water is not made yet (should be good tonight). luckily i had some ph buffer and got it up near 8, but i'm afraid to see what i go home to after work.

WOW! That is why I always recommend against the use of chemical cyano removers. Not many have the results you just experienced but it is a Russian roulette thing, you just never know. Did you use the recommended dose? I think a lot of people cut the recommended in half or as little as 25%.

Dang, sorry for the bad morning. I'm battling cyano in my nano right now and I just keep syphoning it up and feeding less.

renogaw, sorry to hear. You did good by adding a pH buffer to your water. I'm glad that you have done this much.
I recommend at least a 50% water change after you use this antibiotic. Good luck and God bless.

yea, i've got about 40 gallons brewing right now, and plan on dumping every bit into the tank. nitrates were up around 10 which seemed odd with all the death, i would have thought it to be higher.

30 gallon water change, i've found my star fish in a pile of mush, a big almost dead bristle worm, an empty feather duster tube (maybe the bristle worm??), and i'm missing my green chromis...

man, that sucks dude. Check your intake nozzles of your pumps. Chromis die and get sucked up in there pretty easy.
I hate all of this has happened to you. Good luck fixing everything. What do you think the cause of the problems is?

thanks.
btw, my nice beautiful black suncoral is gone too. there are still polyps in some of the heads, but the skin is completely gone.
the algae is from neglect of the tank, i'm 100% sure. with the new kid and new job and not being able to do water changes, my nutrients skyrocketed. i thought i had all of it under control with the exception of some hair type algae and i upgraded my lights to t5's from pc's.
major algae bloom, cyano got so bad it was forming air bubbles inside it, even on the hk4's i have in the tank.

terrible thing to happen near xmas. as a reefer, you know that this is a time to rethink the tank. i understand the new addition to the fam and the new job. but just based on this thread. maybe just maybe there is hope and you can do something to the tank that you've been wanting to do. maybe new corals eventually, rearrange the rock, sump, etc etc....again sorry to hear, a real bummer, but whats done is done. i have read many of your post, and feel confident that you will rebound.....:)

it's very discouraging :( i was sorry to hear about your troubles as well VVV
it's not even the loss of the money (although that sorta hurts). its the thought that i just killed a ton of stuff that didn't have any clue that i was their care taker and all of a sudden dead

That is too bad.
i agree :(
so after using the RSR, you'd think i didnt have any cyano... well, it came back with force due to all the excess nutrients from everything dying. along with some nasty hair type algae everything was looking horrid. so i spent the last 3-4 hours cleaning every single piece of live rock i have, along with all the corals that are still semi alive. the stuff that came off the rock smelled sorta like dying anthelia...or that smell that mushrooms give off. i washed and rinsed in a bucket. hopefully i got everything and won't have to do the cleaning again.
i got the urchin out of the back of the tank. people say nothing smells worse than dead snails.... go sniff a dead urchin...
here's what the water looked like

I dont blame you on waiting. Corals can be very surprising in their hardiness. I still have some things coming back after out power outage ordeal. Those star polyps are opening more and more each day. I pegged them for goners after a week of not opening, but low and behold! Congrats on the mod thing and let me know about the star polyps. We can always meet in Mass again. Just got two new HUGE rocks covered in GSP and yellow zoos. I can always throw a bit of that your way too!
