Obama wins!

I'm rather glad. Hilary just seems like a, erm, unfriendly person. Like, if I was her neighbor, and I needed a cup of sugar, she'd either try to sell it to me or slam the door in my face.

this country is voting "race" in this race. I like when you see the "people on the street" interviews, All you hear is " I think it is good to see a black man in the race for president" what about the issue's experience or better yet his life long friends ships and intimate involvement with totally racist people?? I think the next pres, should be elected because he/she would be a good pres. not because he/she is black/white or anything else. Maybe I am just being unrealistic, but I would like to see America NOT "seeing" everything as a racial issue

We are witnessing a historic moment in American History... regardless of who you support...many people didn't believe this would happen ...at least this soon. Keep in mind that 43 years ago was the day that the Voting Rights Act was inacted...and it will be 45 on the day of the convention that MLK gave "I Have a Dream" speech. It would have been significant if Clinton won, because she is a woman... but I believe it is more significant because a racial minority has won....there has at least been a woman as a VP on a ticket..
This is also a shift in generations because Obama is not a baby boomer and not of the Vietnam or WWII generations.. He also a person that has a person of foreigner as a father...
The majority of people are not voting for him because of race... You could also argue that a good # of people voted for McCain because he is a white male...and people who voted for Clinton because she is a woman and white... There are also people who voted against Obama because of his heritage and he is black. So lets cancels those out because it exists on all sides..
I would argue that being black has been a bigger hurdle because this is precedented moment... Keep in mind that he has had Secret Service protecting him for this whole election cycle.
So just like other firsts in history... this is equally as significant and should be lauded as such... Thurgood Marshall... Jackie Robinson... etc.
This is the 1st time that anyone other than a white man has won a major party nomination.

And they had to not count 2 states to let the back man win.

He would have won either way given those delegates and how they would have been porportioned. His name also was not on either ballot.. and he didn't campaign... He ran a better campaign .. give him credit for that... he also played and won by the rules.

You say "The majority of people are not voting for him because of race"?!?!? Didn't he just win? Then the majority of people must have not voted for Hillary because she is a woman??? Why are we not looking at McCain vs Edwards???

Perhaps a lot of people voted for him because of his positions, perhaps McCain will win for the same reasons.

Rylan, you don't think the world should see things in terms of race, right? then why should this be "lauded" as "significant"?? is he running for president as a black man or as a politician?? he's not the first politician that's won a nomination.

Rylan1,
Let them all tell you he has no chance. These are the same people who rung in Mick Huckabee president after Iowa; the same people who think George Bush has done a smashup job; the same people who will tell you we're winning the war on terror...
They won't give him the accolades he deserves; instead they will tell you he is secretly a Muslim. They won't praise his efforts for running a clean campaign; instead they will say he only won because people hated Hillary that much more. They don't care he is the first minority to win a parties nomination; they are just scared that for the first time ever one of their own might not be calling the shots.
They should be saying "Congratulations Senator Obama.; but instead will say "Did you know his middle name is Hussein?"
Ignorance is deep rooted and takes time to change. This is at least a start...

He is the 1st black man to win the nomination for the major parties for the President of the United States...
Regardless of your vote, America should be proud. You don't think its significant that every other person that has reached this has been a white male. I don't think people should be judged because of race... but to deny race exists is not what I am saying at all... We have differences... skin color, ethinicity, culture, etc... I think its important we continue to acknowledge those things that make us all different...just like men and women... but not to judge based on these things.. The differences are what makes us unique as Americans....the melting pot that we have with infused cultures from all over the world... makes us uniquely American.
So take for example a sports figure... Jackie Robinson... was he just another baseball player... or did his induction into the MLB change the future of baseball to include the very best players regardless of race? Before this moment in time the believe for manny based on history is that no one other than a white male can achieve the highest office.
