before you start on your tirade... take a look at 20th Century history...
The pageant's long history of excluding women of color dates from its beginnings. At some point in the 1930s, it was formalized in the notorious rule number seven of the Miss America rule book. Instituted under the directorship of Lenora Slaughter, rule number seven stated that "contestants must be of good health and of the white race." As late as 1940, all contestants were required to list, on their formal biological data sheet, how far back they could trace their ancestry. In the pageant's continual crusade for respectability, ancestral connections to the Revolutionary War or perhaps the Mayflower would have been seen as a plus.
By the 1960s there still had not been a black contestant. Following the advances of the civil rights movement, black Americans set up their own contest in 1968. Black communities had sponsored segregated black beauty contests for years, dating farther back than the Miss America contest. However, the 1968 Miss Black America Contest, held in Atlantic City on the same day as the Miss America Pageant, was organized as a direct protest of the pageant. On that same day, feminists staged a boardwalk demonstration protesting the pageant. The 1968 Miss America Pageant was confronted with its shortcomings on several fronts.
So ignorance is no longer an excuse we can use in this conversation... My attempt is only to help people to understand that institutions within the black community were set up because of exclusionary practices... as an alternative for african american citizens to have similar opportunities and achievements...etc...
I'll also add... the first african american contestant was in 1970... the first winner '84... and there have been three since... The contest started in 1923

easy solution.
now that anybody can be in the pageant, either have a miss white america pageant as well, or eliminate the miss black america pageant and only have the miss america pageant.
simple fix.

Just so there's no confusion "you people" are the race card players. I didn't want someone wrongly thinking I was talking about them.

Amen brother. I say do away with Ms. Black America. If we do Ms. White America then what about other nationalities? Latino, Italian, etc. Let's just have one and see how it goes.

for what.. why does it have to be eliminated... The Miss America pageant specifically had exclusionary rules for participation..
Lets think of it another way... Lets say you are a female who enjoys sports, particularly football and you want to play football for your school, but girls are not allowed.... So you and other like minded girls decide to form your own girls football league... And that is a great solution everyone is happy ... then a few years down the road... the school bd comes around and says girs can participate... and people start suggesting an all girl league is sexist... which is clearly not the case... the role is too support girls who enjoy football and to create opportunities from them in a more focused way...
So if the girls are able and willing to showcase their talent on the boys team than that should be fine; however, if they don't want to or are unable to compete with the boys.. than they should have another option that better suits there interest or ablilty.

my point is that it was Miss White America... did you see Rule 7? And it wasn't until 1970 that a black woman was able to compete. It was stated in the rules

And our point is, for all the screaming of equal rights, the "white" people give and give to even the playing field, yet the "black" people still have to have their own with it's own racially charged rules on who can enter...
Stop wanting it both ways...either be oppressed and have to have your own awards and contests or be equal...which is it?

what are the rules? Has there ever been a complaint of someone who was not african american that wanted to enter the contest? What are you do you base your opinion on that "whites" are being oppressed? You all are speaking of the top of your head w/o knowing what you are talking about. And by the way.. no one gave anything... this happened based on protests..
There should be a universal event... but other smaller events that cater to whomever are the rights that we have as citizens... I am sure there is a ga-y beauty pageant, there is a Latina Miss America, there is a Miss Asian American... people do your research before you start talking this crap. There also is a Miss Italian American...
Diversity is what makes this country great.... everything doesn't have to fit in whatever little box you all want to put it in...

Equality means equal. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. So if there is a black miss America pageant there should be a Latino miss America pageant, a Asian miss America pageant and a Caucasian miss America pageant. Oh wait the formers are OK, but not the Caucasians....How stupid is that? Yes injustices have been done in the past, but equality is equality. If the football team starts letting girls in the girl football team should let boys in. Asian, Latinos, Indians should be able to compete in the black miss America pageant if they want. AND SHOULD NOT BE DESCRIMINATED UPON WHEN THEY DO SO. We cant change the past. but embracing affirmative action from this point forward is just detrimental to our society. Personally, if Obamma wants to win my support. his first act will be to eliminate affirmative action. It IMO is at this point and time a racist act.

While I am aware that I am one of, if not the most progressive individual on this board, my virtue shines through again. I am a white man of European descent. However in the interest of crossing racial boundaries, I will agree to participate, as a judge, in the Miss Black America Pagent, Miss Asian American Pagent and Miss Latina American Pagent. As someone who is very interested in promoting racial relations, I'd be happy to check out beautiful black, asian and latina women for a couple hours.
I will also judge similar contests for minorities involved in lingerie contests... in the interests of race relations of course.
