if someone wanted to use saltwater from the ocean instead of mixing synthetic salt we get from the lfs do you think by adding ocean water to your tank would you have to still go through a cycling period or just add your fish just curious about it thats all reply if you want.

i use ocean water in my tank
only its from the pier at scripps aquarium in la jolla CA, near my house.
it goes through 3 huge filters that stand about..... 15 feet high...and a huge skimmer.
salinity, pH...all perfect. It's what they use in their tanks at the famous aqaurium right up the road! comes out at a faucet. its great. Never have to mix salt again!

I know someone who used it and everything went down hill. I think he got it from the shoreline which can contain harmful chemicals( not like your water at home does:rolleyes: )
I would say sure but like everyone has said let it cycle and check your paramaters. Good Luck:p

check it out if our salt water fish comes from the ocean wouldn't that make it a somewhat natural enviorment inside our own tanks since its the same water we are removing them from or that really wont make a difference i'm not going to try it just curious.

I wish I got free ocean water...I live next to Lake Michigan and you could not pay me to mix up a batch of water with that stuff...half the summer we can't swim because of all the crap in it:mad:

You suck dan.....
Julius keep in mind the ocean is what 3/4 of the planet? Or is that the human body. Either way the ocean is billions of times larger than our home aquariums. A problem in the ocean can be handled in a much quicker fashion than we can provide at home. Also if a fish's home is having problems in the ocean they can move down the block while they can't do that in our own tanks. When you bring in ocean water you bring in a "mystery smorgasborg" of whatever :) and conditoners can't get rid of all of it. By the time you spend all that money on the conditioners you might as well have gotten some RO water and bufferd it with Instant Ocean anyways.....

Dont any of your LFS's have saltwater pre mixed? I just buy 5 gal of salt water each week. They have a huge vat where they mix it all with RO water. Its only $4.75 or something, also its always mixed right and its at the about the right temp. Its a great deal, no mixing worries, and cheaper than buying RO water, or waiting for my home RO system to do 5 gal (only 3 per hour on mine).

Yeah, but is it salt water? Thats with tax too. Even so, if you go to Vons or something, its like more than $1 a gallon for RO water. I get unlimited RO water at home, but its just so slow.

Did you know that there was an oil tanker with 20 million gallons of oil on it that sank near spain today. Keep in mind that the exxon valdez only had ten million.

Yeah now days in oil tankers they are laid out so oil dose not spew out. Fiest comes the hull, then a protectve layer, finally after that there is the oil compartmen witch is made of at least inch thick steel. In that Alaska spill the boats were diffrent and did not hold the oil as well. Dont drink whiskey and drive a boat. None of that Alaska oil spill would have happened if it werent for the intoxicated captain.
I can just picture the captain that drove onto the rocks in Alaska. One hand on the sterring wheel, one on the whiskey, and last but not least a pipe in his mouth. I almost forgot, THE WHITE BEARD.
