Official Declaration of War

Yeah, I'm really considering building one too. I think the ATS in combination with an RODI unit and phosphate reactor should take care of the issue.

I would like to see the velcro thing Corey, I often thought of using a whole sheet of velcro for the algae to grow on. Would like to help Flower with getting one set up. I am going to Chicago in Juy - I will drop it off.
Glad for some help...You don't have to go through all that trouble and have to make a long trip. The velcro is easy. I even have some that I bought to hold extra cords together. They stick to themselves, just loop it around and it holds. The only area I have a problem with is the water cascading across it. I know a spray bar (and I already have a few) would work, but I need to incorporate some way to rig it in the 90gs sump.
Corey made my overflow hose with a shut off valve and flex hose...Could that be rigged differently? OR Do I use a seperate small pump That just takes the water from the sump to cascade over the mesh and back into the sump? I like the later..that way I don't mess with something that is working perfect.
I can't saw on PVC pipe but the hardware store guy will be glad to cut any size I need, and I already have some PVC blue stuff and cement. LOL...I just need a brain to tell me what exactly to do to make it.

I'll run GFO initially to get rid of the phosphates, then run carbon.
I think the only way I can do a ATS is in a bucket to the side of the tank with a light on only one side. But I'll make sure it has enough surface area on the one side for it to be effective.
So, now I need to go pick up some salt mix (ran out yesterday), a tank divider screen to make the ATS, and some PVC. I have the fittings, just not the pipe.

Okay.
How long did it take for the algae to start growing on the screen?
When did you start noticing results in your DT?

Hey guys, on this page it has all of the info for sizing, flow and lighting requirments. And a whole butt load of question and answeres. http://www.algaescrubber.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=68
Flower: I think it's probably best to run it with either a seperate smaller pump or to tap into your return pump. 35 gallons per inch of the width of the screen. You'd probably need a screen that is 10"x 12" ...so approximately 375gph of flow running through the scrubber.
Yanni: According to Santa Monica the best lighting schedule is to light it for 18 hours a day.

You know, after doing some more thinking, I think the phosphate reactor and a RO/DI unit will be enough.

I am going with my son to a dance competition begining of July. I can draw it up for you Flower and if your hardware guy can cut the pipe for you that would be great, I just have to see this velcro arrangement. Sorry I missed your reply before.

I'm declaring war against the hair algae in my tank.
First thing I'm going to try is a phosphate reactor. I was hoping the new skimmer would solve the issue, and it has helped, but not enough.
I actually have the phosphate reactor coming, but it is on backorder. As it has been for two months...

So, what else should I do? I want to get rid of the algae. I plan on upgrading from my crappy stock fluorescent lighting to 216w of T5s this summer. So, I want the algae taken care of before the new lights so I don't get a huge algae bloom.
Have you narrowed the cause of the excess algae down to Phosphate? What is your Phosphate level? Are you overfeeding? Is is possible your live rock was injured by high ammonia levels during cycling?

Have I narrowed it down to phosphates, no. But I am considering it a likely cause because I do not use RODI water (working on solving that). I just decided to take care of any phosphates that are an issue. My nitrates are a touch high, so I plan on taking care of them with water changes.
I do not over feed at all. The bioload in my tank is two clownfish.
I've had this live rock for three years now, so I honestly can't remember how cycling went. I plan on getting some more rock this summer, just to give my current rock a boost.

Its just the ViaAqua poly reactor. Nothing special.
I think I'm going to see if I can cancel the order.
I just need to figure out where I'm going to put the ATS. I'm going to re plumb my drain line so that some water is diverted to the ATS, which will drain into the return section of my sump. The thing is, the sump is 14 inches high, so obviously for water to drain the ATS has to he higher than that. But, I'm limited on space under the stand (sometimes I think it would be worth having a larger tank simply for more stand space).
Also, I need an RO/DI unit. What units are good? I was looking at the BRS one, is it any good? Obviously it is cheap, but it has good reviews. I'm looking at the 75 gpd 4 stage system.
I bought the BRS 5 stage plus system and I am very happy with it. It comes with the dual TDS meter and flush kit all included. Cost a bit more but with the extras I think it makes up for it. Just my $.02 Plus it was super easy to set up. I went perment and installed under the sink in my basement (tank is in the basement) in a small vanity and it fit great. The waste water line goes directly into the drain, just had to drill a small hole and use all the fittings that came with the unit. BRS does a great job giving you more then enough connections for however you want to install.

Sounds good. I personally won't plumb the waste water tube right into the drain, because I want to use that water whatever way I can. But that's me.
What can you do with the waste water? Obviously in the summer you can water plants, but where I live we have long winters, where house plants are the only plants that need watering. And I don't use 20+ gallons of water a week on plants. What else can it be used for?

Clothes washer is one option. I direct it into my pool in the summer. During the winter it just goes to the septic system. It's perfectly drinkable.

The waste water is perfectly drinkable?
Is RODI water drinkable? I know RO water is, but I've never heard of people drinking it after the deionization process.

Yeah, the waste water has 5 time the contaminants of what goes into the RO but remember it has passed through one or two sediment filters and a very high quality carbon block. The RO waste water is typically much cleaner than tap water.
RO/DI is drinkable. People will mention the lack of ions and how it "steals" ions from your body. This is poppycock. Although DI water has no taste and that alone can make it unpalatable, it is perfectly safe.
