Oh hey, I'm just gonna eat my cupcakes and whip out my breasts! (for feeding my son)

Don't back peddle. I know you're an ogler!

In her defense, she was probably 25ish, and from the looks of it, was her first child. I wasn't offended or aroused, more surprised I guess. I've walked from the kitchen to the front of house thousands of times, and this was certainly the first boob I've seen! (If you don't count those guys trying to get me to vote for Romney back in November... zing!)

There is a time and place... and a cupcake shop isn't it.
I disagree. Cup cakes and breasts go hand in hand.

I still think it's rude. If there is a good chance that people in an establishment will disprove of or be disgusted by an action that you don't have to do (at that place or at that time), then it is common courtesy to not do it. For me, it has little to do with the social acceptance of the action and in some cases I may love to see a couple of nipples while eating cupcakes. If being courteous and selfless is immature in this case, then so be it.

Oh and one more thing. This might be totally inappropriate, but breasts are (spoiler alert) a sex object. Open your mind to this concept and you'll have more fun in life.

LOL...Only in the minds of little horny boys....That's why they grab magazines of national geographic, ogling pictures, where the natives let it all hang out, and hide for hours in the bathroom.

That's actually really gross, national geographic magazines? I don't think that's a thing. I suppose an argument could be made that breasts are just as much a sex object as mouths (probably even less so). That argument doesn't really hold water either way.

LOL...national geographic, dad's Playboy, the Victoria Secret...it doesn't matter, but now your getting it...if you don't like it...don't look. if you do look...act like you are not looking (men have honed that talent for a long time). Men with foot fetishes like naked toes....That's why the religious Men of Iran want their women covered all up, and just leave eye slots to be able to see where they are going...
I wouldn't want to feed my baby in a bathroom, or sit out in the car feeding baby while the rest of my family enjoys a day out. Covering up a bit may be a modest solution, but maybe some babies don't breath well when a heavy breasted mom is feeding, then mom has to watch to make sure baby has a clear airway or maybe it's a bonding time between mom and baby...I always smiled and stared down at my little bundle when I held the bottle for them. For whatever reason she has, it isn't gross and it isn't being rude...and I can't imagine it being sexy.

Flower I understand your position, but bottom line it's rude.....I don't care how natural or how long it has been done on this earth.....A restaurant is not the place to carry out those matters.....Would it also be appropriate for the mother to change the babies diaper on the table as well.....Breast feeding is a natural thing, but it's not a public thing as well...I'm quite sure it would be offensive if some guy got up and walked over to her as she was doing this and said "hey nice t*ts".....Very inappropriate, but so was she......

You hit the nail on the head.....It's bonding time between mom and baby......Keep it between themselves....Again this action is infringing or could make people uncomfortable, and therefore you are being rude, when your actions are construed to some to be offensive or inappropriate.....
If you had guest over and you were all sitting down at the dinner table and the mom pulls this "stunt" at your dinner table you would expect your guest to sit there patiently; pretending they don't see anything.....Would this be appropriate as well.....Again there was no excuse why she shouldn't have covered herself or went to the car......Common decency which she clearly lacks IMHO

The thing is, most women who are breast feeding tend to know that after three months, the babies start to feed on a schedule - mostly they get fed every four to six hours. So, If a woman wants a cupcake, make sure the baby is fed right before you go out for a few hours on the town. That's what my wife and I do - we may pack a bottle when we know we will be gone for more than four hours, but we always time our outings when we know that my daughter doesn't want food.
If this baby was a newborn, the mother shouldn't be out eating cupcakes at a bistro anyways. Or, have someone bring her a cupcake - or go for a quick outing after the baby has eaten. There are PLENTY of ways to cope with feeding schedules. When you have a kid, it's no longer your time - it's their time.
ALSO, I don't know how many of you have heard of an aspirator... But the mother that wanted to go for an outing could have pumped beforehand while she was at the house and if the baby was hungry, then pull out the bottle of breast milk.
Flower, you said there's a problem when it comes to mothers who have large breasts who feed their kids - my wife had the same problem and I am familiar with that situation, however, even when covering the baby up, you can still feel yourself and the babies nose and make sure their airways are clear.
I'm just offering up options that she could have done besides whip her tit out in public, not saying that I agree that it is rude, or agree that it's a completely natural thing that should be overlooked.
From a male perspective, it can not be overlooked. From a female perspective, of course it can.

The reason males can't overlook it is because they view breasts as a sex object first and foremost. And seeing it for what it is, a means of feeding a child, is disturbing to them. A decent woman should keep her boobs covered up in public. If they are hanging out or exposed, then she is not a decent woman.
As to other children observing this, so what? Use it as a learning opportunity to teach your kids that women have breasts for this purpose. What is better, that kids understand that women have breasts so they can feed and nurture their young children, or that women's breasts are taboo and should only be viewed as a sex organs? No wonder girls grow up oppressive about how they look and how big or small their boobs are.

Beth, i love ya but this whole "boobs aren't sex objects and men make them taboo" is a crock. If you had a 15 year old daughter who wanted to go out topless I'm pretty sure you'd have a different opinion. Not to mention that if you walk down the street topless you'd get arrested for indecent exposure and have to register as a sex offender. You're opinion is not the world we live in.
Btw, if you don't think boobs are a sex object then you're not doing it right... ;-)

On a related note, I'm sitting at the gym just thinking about how much I appreciate the inventor of yoga pants. Thank you nameless genius!

Crim, no where in this topic did I say that women's breasts were not sexual. Any woman here would be able to confirm that they certainly are sexual. It is interesting that some of the men have come up with me saying that breasts are not sexual. However, that is not all they are and, in fact, that is not the primary purpose---feeding and nurturing of babies is their primary function. There is no way to argue about that.
My comments here are based on most of the men's reaction to something that shouldn't really be such a big deal. Women's breast are sexual organs, and men view them as a sexual objects first, foremost, and only.

It reminds me of the bit on Seinfeld. Cleavage is like the sun, you don't stare. You get a sense of it and then you look away. The same should be applied to yoga pants. Sometimes that's easier said than done though.
Breasts are important for feeding a child, yes. However, they can also be important for a couple's intimacy. I can confidently say that if I had a wife, I wouldn't want her sharing her breasts with random men at a cupcake shop. I really don't even think that's old fashioned. Sure, they are her breasts and she can do whatever she wants with them, but even so.
Another question: How do we define something as sexual? Just because you can have sex with it doesn't make it sexual.
