Not trying to start anything, but Seth haven't you already made up your mind on the tank? Not anything that we say will make you change your thoughts. Slow down a bit and think this out, all of your fish have just died, and all you can think about is the new tank to set up? Seems to me that you should put your efferts into thinking why the fish died. Just my opinion. I may be wrong.

500+ claims sfe require a minimum of 30g, which as far as I'm concerned, a 29g is the same thing. I was just saying that as I watch my 6" sfe swim around my 150g tank w/about 170 lbs of LR,kn I try to imagine how it would be if he were 2-3 feet long, and I don't think there would be enough room for him to be happy. Don't get me wrong, I would say my sfe is my favorite addition to my tank, and i'm sure you'll love yours, but if that guy gets 2 feet long, how much room will he have to cruise around in a 29g. But by no means am I trying to talk you out of getting one, like I said, they are cool to watch.

In my opinion, a 48" long 55 gallon is the minimum for a SFE.
When looking at the requirements for housing a certain fish, tank dimensions are something that gets overlooked way too often. If you have a 200 gallon tank that has a 24" x 12" footprint and is 72" tall (this is just an example, not a "real" tank), it would not be a suitable tank for a SFE.
You need to take in to consideration the footprint of the tank, not just the number of gallons.

Where's your salinity at?
Ammonia is probably high from deaths, but you need to be doing water changes every day (maybe more...) to get that to 0.0
pH is low. Have you checked the water that you are using for water changes?
Seth, no one is lecturing you or putting you down because of your age. You have to understand though that when you post "I know this was my first mistake.." you are basically painting a target on your chest. You're admitting you rolled the dice with the tank and lost.
Having said that, leaving your lights on for 3 days didn't do this
... like I said having three different types of algae bloom in your tank in a 36 hour period seems impossible to me. Algae needs more than just light... what was feeding it?
Algae also didn't kill your fish. I could see a huge algae bloom sucking the O2 out of the water at night, but not when your lights were on.
Like someone else said, let's not talk about a new tank right now. Post exactly what you did, what your parameters were, feeding etc.

I agree.... Eels love to "prowl" at night for food. People seem to think that all they do is live in a hole. That's not true. They do swim a lot.

i have to agree with journeyman, that instead of trying to setup a new tank here, we should figure out what happened with this one. i also agree with you, sweetie, that people should not come on here to tell you to get out of the hobby... you admitted that you knew it was a mistake, so pointing it out over and over again won't do anything... i don't understand some people somtimes, but that's besides the point. you want to be in the hobby, and there's nothing we can say that'll change it, so instead of being so negative, maybe we can put that effort into something a little more productive.
we do need to know your sg.
i agree, even a 55g is too small for an eel. You could get a convict blenny / engineer goby (weird cause it's the same fish, and it's not a blenny or a goby...) I have one, and it reminds me very much of an eel, but the mouth is more rounded than an eel. He's wickedly cool and is about 8" right now. I was told they get about 14" or so. He's so cool to wach... he acts like my ywg, where he'll sit in his little hole, slither out to get food, and then swim backwards into his hole.
first and foremost, we need to get to the root of the problem with this past tank before moving on to another bigger one. did you ever use any medication? How old were the fish that died? did you recently introduce a new one? was anyone at your house while you were gone?

as much as you post you should realize that a sfe will not work in a 55 gal. i have a 55 and a 75, i would love to have an eel but i know i can not..
KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS!!!!!!!

FROM all your post that i have read it sounds like you should take a break from killing fish, wait till you have enough money to properly care for them.

That's an uncalled for comment. This may not have anything to do with money.

Seth, please correct me if I have any info wrong. The 30 gallon tank was set up early September. Brand new sand. Livestock (3 fish? and I won't mention any further) were added about two weeks later. Live rock was added after that.
I don't think it is a huge mystery, I think the tank was trying to cycle and the bane of this hobby, impatience, got in the way.
I agree, the tank needs to be cleaned. Then let cycle. You won't be able to have fish OR eels for some time, until it is completely through the cycle.
