OK, I need some framing opinions here!

The painting is in. It's really fantastic. It's also really HUGE, since he accidentally painted it at a larger size than we originally agreed on. I know, woe is me....life's tough, to be given a BIGGER painting.
BUT. I had originally intended this to be a 16x20, with a 20x24" frame. He painted it at 18x24, which would mean I'd be matting it into a 24x28 inch frame! VERY big for the wall I want to place this on, and I think it would overpower it.
Here is the painting in an 18x24" frame already, with a tape measure for scale:

And....here's the wall where it's going. Yes, I know I need to put in my stupid baseboards here still.

You see what I mean? If I add another 4 inches of width here, I'm going to lose most of the wall. I don't think it's going to look right if I do that.
Am I nuts? Should I mat it anyway? If so, I was thinking of using a light tan/ivory mat. It's about 30 bucks more to get the larger frame and a sheet of matting, so it's not a fortune...I just think it's going to look wrong on the wall.
Opinions? I could use some thoughts here.....

I think your right. Tanish matting with a slightly larger frame. I don't think it would look bad being a little bigger than intended.

Nothing at all. I'm just vacillating back and forth regarding the mat. I am playing in photoshop right now. Stay tuned....

Corel and photoshop are so much fun. I didn't adjust for keystoning here, but you can get a good idea of size.
The basic frame, hung:

An ivory mat:

An aqua mat:

And for fun, a purple mat:

If I do this, I'm leaning for the aqua mat. I just don't think the ivory looks as nice as I was thinking (tan looks awful, didn't even bother to show you!) and the purple looks kind of cool, but I don't think I can find this color mat around here.

Go with the aqua mat or a sea foam blue mat. Definitely. Hang it on that wall. It will look great!

Just got back from the store. It was a rush thing because my coupon and the sale expired tonight....50% off the frame, 40% off the mat cutter, and a coupon worth 20% off my entire purchase including sales items. over $100 worth of stuff for $44.00....can't beat that!!
Good news is, yes, the painting looks great with the bigger frame.
Bad news is the blue mat they had was too dark. I got it anyway...just in case...but my gut instinct was right. You really can't tell much difference between the black wood frame and the blue mat. Oh well, off to Pearl's tomorrow AM. I need an dusty aqua mat for this. Hell, maybe pearls will have one pre-cut.

I agree, what you have is too dark...I would match the lighter decor already in the home to have it all come together.

Just got back from Pearl's. I found a periwinkle blue mat that's perfect. Little aqua, little dusty purple, little grey....the perfect periwinkle is where you really can't tell what color it is. I have the outer side cut, and I'm going to practice on a few scrap pieces before I cut the inner bevel.
I'm not fussed about the dark blue - I'll keep it for some other project. Our guest bedroom is a very Cape Cod beach theme, so some white frames with that blue mat would look really nice against, oh, say, a few of Nate's watercolor postcards.

Waiting to see the finished results all hung up....and a view from your office.

It's done, and here are the pics. I didn't cut the mat perfectly, but I'm not all that fussed. If I ever really get in the mood I'll go buy another and have it cut professionally, but you can only tell when you're up really close. Not bad for first attempt IMO.
Closeup View:

View from the office, wherein I sit on my tush and read more often than not:

It may not stay there. The other placement (the spot covering the breaker box) seems a little more hidden, but I noticed it's actually perfectly aligned to be seen from the 110g aquarium nook. Which will be the OTHER place where I will sit on my tush and read when the tank is up and running. So I don't know where it will finally end up, but for now I'm very happy.

Very nice, and the mat picked up the color from the coral, and the small amount of the same color on the horses head.

Looks good.. is the other mat cut exactly the same or was it a bit smaller? I would have put the darker on the bottom and then put that purple on top... though I am a professional framer and LOVE the look of double and tripple matted pictures :) I think you did a great job though!

Here are some of the pics I sent him for inspiration:

I love how close he stayed to the actual fish, but went wild with the color.
