Looks great!! I have a 3inch peacock in a 14 gal
so far so good! I even added 2 turbo's...he tried to beat them up but they are pretty big. I kinda trained him to leave them alone...Yes I do think they can "learn" a little. Where you getting the mantis from? I was lucky and got mine for 40.00 from a LFS , they had to order it for me. All the places I found on line wanted 40.00 + 30-40 for shipping! yikes :(..... keep the pic's comin

Hey, I followed your thread, also!
(I mentioned it in post#1)

I am going to play with adding some snails. Cerith and turbo, most likely. Hope yours continues to leave the turbos alone. Joe's has figured out how to smash and eat them.
Talked to my lfs and they seem to think they can order a Peacock for me. If they can't, I will just order a lot of stuff online to make it worth the shipping.
Right now, I am just concentrating on putting the tank together. Hope to get the rest of the stuff I need and finish this weekend.
I prob. won't do any corals, but am thinking about some macros to add some color. (or will the Mantis tear them up?)
Also, might add a couple of Damsels?

Ok, put in 3" tunnel, added 20# of sand along with about 5# of aragonite and 15# live rock. Just have a power head and el cheapo heater in there for now.(cycling)
Have a QT and HT tank right now and they are using both my HOB filters. Once I free one up, I will steal the filter for this tank. Also, not sure about the heater. Will see if it effective enough for a 20g tank. Plus, I am worried about it getting smashed as it is glass. I think I will search for something different.
Added egg crate for top and a light(reg 20g) I think I am going to cut out an area for feeding. Do I need to cover this with something? Or just leave it open??

Any topics with pics of a finished mantis tank around?

Pretty sure my thread got bumped all the way down, I don't post often anymore. ;]
G.Chigara, "McLovin". I didn't notice, but I assume you're getting a peacock right? Don't get a Chigara. >< They're reclusive and soo boring, I never see mine. I'm thinking about trading him back into the LFS for a peacock when I'm ready to upgrade my reef. Then he can have that tank.

Your tank is looking great. =) A little advise, if you're making this a reef glue down your frags. My mantis decided to decorate with my blue tub zoas and dragged them through the burrow and into the back of the tank where they died from lack of light.

Your manitis is really not known for being interactive
Common name: None
Functional type: Smasher
Range: French Polynesia to western Indian Ocean
Habitat: Reef flat and rocky intertidal
Depth: Lower mid-intertidal to 2 m
Home: cavities in rubble, rock or bench
Diet: Gastropods and hermit crabs, but will take other crustaceans and mollusks
Size: 9–105 mm
Color: Variable; dark olive green to light cream, usually mottled; white meral spot; males darker; meral spot white
Distinguishing Characters: Largest Gonodactylus
Activity: Diurnal, closes at night
Aquarium Requirements:
Temperature: 22–29° C
Salinity: 33–36 PSU
Cohabitants: Will kill even large gastropods, crabs, clams
Aquarium size (adult): 20–40 l depending on size of stomatopod
Aquarium substrate: Sand and gravel with coral rubble or LR and cavity
Suitability for Aquarium: Good; hardy; not very interactive; largest animals can chip glass tank
Availability: Common in shipments from Indonesia, Philippines, Guam, Fiji
I would also say if a hobbyist is going to go mantis/reef then go with corals that require low lighting

Yea, I plan to get a Peacock. That's too bad about your Chigara. I hope the lfs will let you trade, or at least take him off your hands!
As far as your thread is concerned, any post will brng it back to the top!!

Ok Joe, taking your advice
and considering other post, I changed to the 2" tunnel.
Also, I added a couple of macros for a little color. Broke up the rubble rock I had into smaller pieces. Ranging from 1/2" to about 3"s. Then just threw them around the tank. (figured the Mantis will rearrange anyway!
)
And see test results. The cycle has begun!!

Hmmm....joke about the fall and not about injuring my rear end....not the route I thought you would go!!
Maybe that would have been too easy! lol

Ok, so tank is cycled!!
Thinking about picking up about 25 each of the tiniest cerith and nassarious snails I can get, with the hope that they may be undetected for awhile! (Idea from Joe) Also, may pick up a damsel or 2?? I put a freshwater hood and light on top of eggcrate(hood doesn't fit tank. I may also pick up an actinic bulb for this(instead of the white) I cut a small portion out of the eggcrate for feeding. Also, I placed a rock in front of heater(hopefully to protect it from being smashed)
Any other ideas or advice??

I hate these little pics, and really weird, the last pic is a mirror image of what the tank looks like.
Hmmm.....don't know how I did that!

Ok, I told my lfs to order: 25 of the teeniest, tiniest cerith and nassarious snails they could get, 2 cheapo damsels and 1 less then 3 inch Peacock Mantis Shrimp.
They said they should get the order on Friday! (I hope so!) Woo-hoo!

Hopefully not!!

Some say that they have had success keeping fish with their Mantis!

But I am getting cheap Damsels, jus in case the mantis finds them
!
