Well that's the way it goes, if you want to keep it, YES you will buy a whole new system for this fish in the near future, or trade him or sell him. Ask them if they would order you a multi-pack algae sheet, my LFS would order them for me, go to a different one if they won't do it. Also try Formula 2, they like that very much, but you WILL need to feed algae sheets along with it, so one way or another, you need to get him to eat it. I find out once they eat one thing, they'll try another. By placing a piece of algae sheet near where he hangs out the most and place a piece of rock on one end and just watch if he would go after it, I find that out when my tangs won't go up to the clip to eat it and this method works. :happyfish

There is no way a fish store wouldn't take back a $35 dollar fish (a mistake they made) for a lesser value fish....... and there is no way your tank is going to stabilize without you researching more.....

I really hope he is... there are a lot of very skilled (I don't consider myself one of them..) aquarists trying to help him out.
This is such a rewarding hobby if it is done properly. It also is a huge money drain and a horrible disappointment if it's not done right.
15 years ago (when I was in HS) my parents bought me a 55 gallon for my birthday. They were soo excited that they were able to afford to get me such a gift (I was overjoyed too! I'm blessed with an amazing family.... looking back on it my parents made some huge sacrifices for me and I was not nearly as grateful as I should have been. That's another story, however). It was a DAS tank (small built in skimmer), normal lights.. base rock... CC substrate. The fish store where they got it sold them all these additives... 6 damsels to cycle (lost 3 during the cycle). The store kept selling us stuff... anemones, corals, fish.. and everything kept dying... I gave up on it finally after about 18 months. The LFS that sold my parents the tank is probably the most well known tank in Dallas (*North Dallas* cough, cough) and I'm still bitter towards them to this day. I totally trusted blindly that they had my best interest in mind...
Anyway, that's why I hope Shista is listening... the posters here really DO have his best interest in mind. Everyone here wants his tank to succeed. No one wants him to get frustrated over this hobby..

I am sure it is hard for shista to fight that urge to get more and more things and its hard for everyone to not get frustrated with the problems he's having. I think most of us have been there, naive, and blissfully intriqued by all the things you can find in the store. Unfortunately, shista doesn't realize that its not so much about loosing fish as what the FISH are going through before they die. Hopefully, very soon it will become more clear to him what he's doing to the fish. BUT in the mean time I hope everyone continues to give advice, regardless of how many times you repeat yourself. Many of us don't have any reliable resources to go to and this site is our only trusted source.
And I too had to come to realize that everyone here on SWF.com only have our best interest in mind...not their own profits as the lfs's do.
