I really want to add a Blue Star Leopard wrasse to my reef. I was thinking of doing a pair, but I absolutely want to get a male.
I know the care issues with these fish, etc. My plan was to purchase a pair when my rock in the QT (tank doesn't get meds) was more established.
A local board member is selling a really healthy male, about 3" that eats frozen for $150. It's a steep price, BUT he already eats frozen and is coming from a tank, so he's accustomed to tank life. This is not a fish I plan on ordering online. Keep in mind, I live in NY, prices are much higher here, especially for the more "rare" fish.
Would you spend the $150?
Would you offer less? If so, how much would you pay, keeping in mind where I live?
Do you think a pair is better, or just get the male now?

WOW...I googled it, and found the exact one you are talking about

beautiful fish.....BUT....$150??? I only found a female for same though.....I guess it all depends how bad you want it....and the + is that it already eats frozen

The sad part is, that even if I do pay $150 for him, it will still be one of the cheaper fish on my list of new additions! Lol

Blue spotted jawfish are an easy 110 bucks, I don't see a problem with paying 150 for one that's established except that when I googled it I found one of the popular online sites selling a medium female for 49.99 so that does seem a bit steep depending on how much shipping is of course.

The females and males look very different, and the females are usually cheaper and much more common.
I won't do shipping on these, I've read that they don't ship well. I think if he still has it next weekend, it's mine.

I understand the shipping thing, but didn't this guys fish have to get shipped from somewhere at some point? just sayin :)
they also had a large male for 80.00 so for the pair that would be 130.00
just my .02 :)

Yes, but it's over the initial shipping shock, which most of them don't do well with, that's more of what I meant.
Turns out that this guy has only had this fish for a month and he went from saying that it "eats like a pig" to it only eats pellets and mysis. The guy keeps changing the story, so I'm probably not going to get it.

He seems that he would accept less. I would offer $80 and see what he says. Eating mysis is still more of a guarantee than you get on others.

In PMs the guy was a bit of a jerk and kept changing the story. I offered $100, pay in advance for him to hold til Thursday and he was not nice about it.

You can find better then. He is hiding something to be acting like that with the fish. You don't need to be treated bad. I would say no deal on this one... but that's me.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, but I figured these places would have live delivery guarantees.

wow, beautifully fish I just googled it, you definitely need both male and female for the wow factor. The site i was at said $50 for female (medium) $80 for male (large), with 14 day guarantee. The only wrasse I think is in the same ball park is the Xmas wrasse.
