Well Mike, whever you decide to buy from; just use a soft bristle brush (NEW) and scrub using sw works good.

why on earth would you scrub the rock? If it's uncured just cure it in a tank or something. What does scrubing do?

Scrubbing removes all of the loose detritus.
you'll still get PLENTY of die off without leaving all the loose junk on the rock.

Wont scrubbing the rock remove all the good hitchhikers? I have seen some LR with feather dusters and I really wouldnt want to lose them by scrubbing. Is there any other way to get rid of the debris without losing your HH's?

You need to scrub the rck vigorously with the most stiff-bristles plastic or animal hair brush you can find. However, under no circumstances use a metal-bristled brush. You will probably also want some other tools like screwdrivers and whatnot. I detailed the entire curing process here in a FAQ I wrote awhile back. Hope it helps.

I've never srcubed my lr. Never. I've rinsed it off in tank water, but never scrubed. I still don't see why I would, esp if the rock is cured.
Yes, just put the lr in the tank with just saltwater. Run a ph and a heater and your filter. the lr will need light for some of the stuff to live. don't leave on all day, you'll algea. Just leave on 6-10 hours, however long you would leave it on if you have fish. Set your lights to a timer. It'll be less stressful on the fish when you have them.

so leave my 4 250watt MH on for 8 hours and my 140watt Actinics on for 10? the rock needs that much? hehehe they better get COLORFULL with that light just to cure hehe

I'd leave the lights off during the cycle. You see, you are going to get an explosive bloom of hair algae (after your bloom of brown diatoms). This is natural. The only thing the lighting is going to do is make the hair algae bloom even more pronounced.

Coraline algae needs light to grow, but very little growth if any is going to occur during your cycle anyways. It is totally up to you whether you keep the lights on or not. My opinion is that it is just going to raise your lighting bill and cause more initial hair algae.
ps- I have very intense lighting and I find that the coraline grows better in the shaded areas. There is a thread somewhere where quite a few people admitted that this is the case in their tank as well.

okay, I know nothing about different types of lights. The tanks you see at the stores don't have lights on, but I was thinking some light, just regular ones, would help the coral and good stuff grow on the rock, but I guess if the tank is cycling it could all die anyway...so I guess, I have no idea now. I've never used lr to cycle my tanks.

well ur totally right nothing will really grow in cycle.. so ill leave my MH and VHOS off during cycle just turn em on to check out the tank... then when cycle is done lights go on to create growth..
now during a cycle.. what about water changes... dont u want the water to go high in ammonia and nitrites and all that so i dont do any water changes just a water change after cycle is complete correct?

Wait until your ammonia level rises exponentially, then falls back down to zero. That is when you do a 20-30% water change :)
