let me give any of you who use canisters or any items that use O'rings as seals
KEEP EXTRA ON HAND

I just changed out my chemi-pure elite from my Cascade 1500.....put it back together....LEAKS....took it back apart....I had no extra seal

SOOOOO...I used a large rubber band....YES....that will work.....BUT if I kept a spare seal....well I probably would have changed that.
I will be ordering extra.....
p.s. keep rubberbands on hand too

Well I just got home and it's leaking again
....I'm not so s ure it's the seal, but crappy pet-co had nothing...duhhhh...who woulda guessed
Now I have to find a place to order the seal, and I don't even know if that is why it is leaking....it is leaking from 2 closure clips
........a new filter is almost $200

NO, I used it with it
....I'm so freakin frustrated right now

and I also lubricated both really good with vaseline....that has always worked for me on other stuff

+1 on lubricating your seals.
Does the seal itself look like it's in bad shape or showing signs of degradation?
I know this is a dumb question but are all your trays sitting properly inside the filter?
I once had a somewhat similar problem with one of my Rena canister filters. Water was leaking out of the motor head where the power cord comes out of it. Turned out to be one of the O-rings in one of the hose fittings on the quick disconnected wasn't seated properly. I'd check every seal possible. Who knows, it may turn out to be something simple like mine was. I was on the verge of returning the darned thing. But since then I haven't had any probs.

So what do you have on there right now? The O ring or the rubberband?
I have both on....
the o-ring looked fine
my husband took it off, and flipped it over and he thought maybe it was worn, so MY idea was to add the rubberband (it worked on a different unit once)
Before I took it off and cleaned it, it had a teeny leak from one spot.....that stopped after a minute of running
NOWWWW it has 2 leaks from 2 spots that will not stop....I had to close the shut-off and unplug the filter ...this way my ato won't continue to add drops of water either
I am having a bad bad month

Probably time to replace the seal then if it was already leaking before. Even if it was only for a moment it's probably a sign that it's time to be replaced. After I had the leak happen on mine I didn't want to take any chances so I actually have my canister filter places inside of a plastic tubby under my stand on my FW tank. It's just some insurance to buy some time in case it does leak again. Maybe you can do that if the leak isn't too bad until you can get a new seal.
If you have trouble finding a new seal I've located one site online that has them. I'll pm you if you need it. They're $9.99.

Thanks 2quills.....I just found a site too....and it's $5.63
Is it actually called the canister filter motor gasket
It has to be right???
Bad thing is, no matter what I order it won't go out till Tuesday :(
In my case it's best to not run it.....as much that drips out, my ato will replace it with fresh ro/di.....I don't want to chance a salinity issue

Yep...it's the motor gasket.
Gaskets are flat and O-rings are, well...round and shaped like an O. lol

I think there are 2 sizes, make sure you get the large one that fits the 1200 and 1500.

you should no longer use vaseline for lubrication. it actually wears down the life span. use vegtable oil or silicone grease
