OT - My new computer

The only difference i noticed was it was 20 dollars more; everything seemed the same, the dual lan is a great feature but the computer thats goign to be hooked up to the dsl isnt going to be on the same time as the other computer sometimes, im just going to get a router,50 dollars plus i wont have to worry about the computer wasting electricity. I dont pay for it but my dad has been complaining about electricity, we have 2 fishtanks and its his idea anyways!:rolleyes:, but yeah, once i get a job and when i get my classes in college i wont be using the comp as much as i am now.
the nforce isnt just an onboard videocard?
Sound is the same slothy, i checked:D
As for the videocard, which would you recommend the Xtasy 9100 64mb or the ATI radeon 9000 64meg ddr pro?

never once said a bad word about ATI. not ONCE. And your 9700 is definitely a great card, but he is looking in the 100 dollar range, where there are alot of cards by both ati and geforce. Which are mostly comparable, esp for what he is going to use. In fact, a riva tnt2 32MB could power the games he mentioned(i believe).
My only personal problem with radeon is one that slothy has verified and noted thye have corrected, recently. Which I was unaware of.
heh heh, slothy, I like 3d mark. Just have one q, does itnow support radeon or amd? I know the earlier versions did not and the benchmarks were never very high in comparison, but the results were actually as good or better in many instances. JUst wondering?

#1 combo for 3marks2003 is 9700 and a amd XP.. ATI is the only dx9 complaint card out (other than geforce FX, but i dont know if that shipped yet).. so most test cant be run, since none of the other cards support the dx9 commands

linksys is one of the best out there.
and now lets talk about other stuff if u want to buy computer stuff go check out www.pricewatch.com it have the best price and it kills us computer sales man to go there cuz there price are soo low. somtime is cheaper then wholesales. and don't but the ti4600 video card cuz they are stop making them so it will be hard to rma if somthing happen to urs. now the the ram if u can wait like 6 month the new DDR2 are coming out with 400 mhz and up.
oh and if u are looking for SATA it hard to found even my company have a hard time getting it. right now only SeaGate release there 80 SATA but our company only got few hundred and we ordered like 2000 pic. and if u want a good HD with good price then wait for the WD 38gb SATA with 10000 rpm it rocks :).
and now the CPU AMD is making a brand new CPU the one we are using is 32bit buy there makinga 64bit one should be out within 6month and Intel does have 64 bit cpu but it didn't work with most softwares so they are gonna rebuild it and gonna take them a long time to fix that. well there just too much new things coming out.
Oh ya on the mother board i hate ASUS now after i got there A7x333 monther is a trash. good mother board now is from LEADTEK they make one of the best MB out there now u can check there web site out. and they make good video card too but the price is a big higher.

slothy, that is cool, the last couple of versions did not support amd or ati, so your scores would always be lower with them than with a pentium and a geforce.
I agree, the linksys is a good router, as well as net gear. dlink still makes some decent ones, but are often a problem configuring, and since most ISPs do not support it, they won't give you much help with setting them up(and often it is their settings you need to do this). Pretty much leaves you on your oown there.

i just went to the store and just ordered everything for 658 dollars here it goes:
Asus A7n8x motherboard with AMD XP 2000
ATX enermax 350 W powersupply
512Mb 333mhz PC2700 DDR memory
floppy
Asus V9180 Magic 64mg Geforce 4 8x AGP ( i know its not that good, but thats all i can afford right now, i am going to have 300 dollars to blow on a better videocard in a year) its only a 50 dollars plus i didnt want my dad paying for it.
Western Digital 80 gig with 8 meg cache 7200 rpm
48x16x48 burner
logitech or microsoft optical mouse(dont know which one yet)
and free embedded card reader for only free since we paid in cash
went with the crappy case since im going to change it later
total 658.60 with tax im going to pick up on tuesday and it will be all finished! woohoo! i didnt want my dad to pay for things im only going to use, all the thing im going to upgrade later on: case and videocard in a year when i get the $$$. Is it possible to change the CPU later on? like in 3 years? can i remove the CPU after i installed it?
Thanks to everyone who helped me out esp FishHub, slothy, YellowG555, and avatar50 and everyone who helped. Without you guys i would be clueless in buying this stuff, i'll keep you guys updated, now all i have to do is buy a linksys router and the cables and im set

yes u can take the CPU off after u installed it. but after 3 year the CPU will be usless and ur mother board will only got around 2.7 mhz so just get a new mother board and stuff. u should try and ask for a leadtek mother board it had sound card and nic on board already and they have some good sound card on those board.

they actually dont have leadtek only some crap brands. It asus should be fine
my standards are pretty low since i have a crap computer and an intergrated videocard with no AGP slot
yes thats a very old comp.... very very old..... very old indeed.... :D

then in that case, you are gonna have a hard time later on upgrading video. Imo, you would be better off, geting the other board and a tnt2 for now, with 32 bm graphics then you can always upgrade video no prob. You can get a pci video card, but they are not nearly as good and are very limited. The best you can do is a 64 mb, radeon 7000(i think). Other wise, to upgrade to agp yo need a new motherboard.
Or, if you want there are some boards out there that have onboard video and and AGP slot, which are fairly inexpensive too. ECS makes a decent one, nothign great but not bad and prob cheaper than teh asus. and gives you more upgrade options. the processor is easy to change and can be done. up to the 2400, unless yoru board supports 333 processors, tehn you could get the 3000xp.
other than the board, that should do you just fine. just wanted you to know, Maybe you may want to seek another mobo. either a cheaper one with agp slot, or just get one with agp and a 32 mb (for now) card to save money. Probably you will only get 32 from the onboard anyway.
As far as upgrading in 3 yrs, It is hard to say waht computers will do exactly in 3yrs, but even if they do change that much, you will want a new board with the new features by then anyway.

i bought my computer 3 years ago, Its an HP:p 933mhz 256sdrampc133 im using an old radeon card ... dvd is acts strange a lot ..... good thing this comp wont be mines in a week! it still can play some games fairly. i am not going to upgrade this computer, The computer is fairly small and there isnt much space inside for another motherboard, its a "special" one built for HP...

ok i just look up that mother board and it will suppor up to 2.8 mhz. It seems to be a very nice mother borad. But since i use the last ASUS mother board A7V333 i will never buy anything from ASUS AGAIN! LOL i replace 3 mother board to get the one that was working right. oh ya if i were u i get a cheaper mobo and get a better video card u don't need a high end mobo its just gonna waste ur money if u going to up grade in few years. and that mother board suppor a SATA and i don't think u will need it.

heh, thats fine. I learned my lesson about no agp slots! if i had spent 200 dollars more i would have gotten a computer with an AGP slot... but i didnt know at the time...

go to www.pricewatch.com it is buy to buy parts there the price are the best in the world !!! :) and there store like newegg.com and mwave.com those are good web stores
pricewatch.com is not a store but it give out the information to where to get the cheapest of each parts.

even yourlocals should be very close, the computer industry is too over crowded and too competitive.
xp 1800 -2000 processors should be about 100 any where
boards 60 to 120 depending on features, you can get a nice one for 80
hard drives 100 to 120
case w ps(300 watt) a decent one goes for around 60 to 70
cdrw real good selection for 60 bucks
floppy 15 bucks or less
256 mb of ram should be around 40 somewhere
and video card, 50 to 85 for most decent ones, then there are the ones the techs and gamers want for upwards to 300+ as well as there are also some decent 32 meg cards for under 50, if you dont play games or only basic games that are not too intensive they would be fine.
that covers most of your parts right there,a dn those prices are pretty much standard all around, anywhere you go
