OK, I am not going to get into the American/Import debate.
There are many places online that you can find info on cars. I think Edmunds.com is a good place, plus if you are a member of AAA they can help you. Do your research now, a $10 book may help you on the $18,000 car. Another thing to is to see if you can rent the car you want to buy from a rental car angency. There was one car that I liked, then I rented one and after driving it I found that I could not see the speedometer most of the time.
I personally HATE the negotiating process with the salesmen. If they would do it logically I would have not problem. But when you make a point they always go "What, I don't understand what you are saying." or "I have to go talk to my manger about that."
With all of that said here is what we did the last time we bought a car. We found what type of car that we wanted and what models there were available. Did some research online and then we test drove that cars that we were interested in. When we did the test drive we would tell the salesman that we are not interested in buying a car today. We just want to find out what car we are interested in buying. Then there were no hassels after the test drive. We only had one person say, "So what can I do to get you in this car today." Sometimes they may say that you need to talk to the manager to find out why you are not negotiating on the car. No big deal, just tell them that you are trying to decide what car to buy.
Then we set up the deal online. I can't remember what site we used, but I know that we sent out request to 3 different sites. 2 of them e-mailed us with the price of the car, out the door. One called us and said the they generally offer the car about $600 over invoice, however if we found a better deal to call him. This was exactly the BS that I was trying to avoind. The other 2 sites e-mailed us with the price if the car. Obvioulsy it is through a dealer and then all we had to do was to go in, sign the papers and drive off the lot. It was much more painless than doing the negotiating process. For instance when we bought our van they kept pushing the extended warranty. The last car we bought the guy peeked his head around the door and said, "Do you want the extended warranty?" We said No and he said OK. That was it.
I hope this helps.
