Just another thing to think about while the 911 incident is being remembered.
Soon the Congress will debate the Patroit Act II. Although Civil Liberties is not something that many of us think about very often, maybe we should also be aware of what has happened as a result of 911. One should ask the question as to whether or not the people who died on that tragic day would want to see their families rights and civil liberties be restricted as a result of what happened that day. Many of those who died were of MIddle Eastern decent.
For example... There are US citizens being held w/o the right to counsel or if they are given that right the US Dist. Att. can monitor the cofidential communications exchanged. Also little did you know that everything you get at the library is being watched by BIG BROTHER. In addition, thousands of US att. have been able to get wiretaps and pen registers on a showing of much less than probable cause. On Monday I went to a symposium on Civil Rights and Ethics, which focused on Rights and responsibilities of criminal attorneys after 911. Let me tell you, its really scary the things that the government can do now that it could not traditionally do before 911.
For those of you who say well thats the price of being safe and secure after 911. IN MY OWN OPINION give me liberty or give me death. This county has made mistakes like this before. The internment of the Japanese, Lincoln suspending habeus corpus during the civil war, the Macarthy Hearings during the 1950's. This country is no stranger to the mistakes of the past and quick swift actions without a consideration to the ramifications of the decision will lead, as it has always done, to big mistakes. If I had died on that day I would be appalled at the actions taken our governement has taken thus far.
Just something to think about...
