Pain In The Wrasse.... Had Enough

I think wrasses are cool fish and most are very active swimmers. The first fish I ever bought was a Yellow Wrasse and I still have him, now fully grown. Also had a Red Flame Wrasse but unfortunately he jumped out of the tank and woke up one morning to find him dead on the carpet. I still don't know how he managed to jump through the eggcrate cover, especially since he wasn't small. Now I just have the yellow wrasse and the Australian Tusk, both get along fine.

I know that the Harly Tusk and Cuban Hogfish are considered Wrasse, but would they co-exist peacefully in a 300g? And if so what about a red coris added with them? They all differ somewhat in their body shapes...I wonder if they'll do fine together?
I have these two together now and had them together in MS for at least 5 yrs....they're great together. (IMO, both fantastic fish.)

God I swear I am going to get a completely covered tank...LOL. But then they will prolly all die from heat stroke.

If you only plan to buy the larger wrasses, you can use an eggcrate for cover. The holes are too small for them to jump through.

Yeah, A tusk just doesn't look like a jumper; but I had an 8" one hit the floor about a year ago. I heard the plop and still have him.

No, he made it and I still have him. I also have a 2nd one in another tank. I also lost 2 in Katrina. I have never seen any aggression from any one of the 4 I've kept. They're very very very robust, usually active and death to inverts; but I've never seen one bother another fish. I do know that some do, though.
I love these fish and think the extra $ spent on the Australian variety is well worth it. (I think any Aussie fish is worth the extra $, almost as well captured and handled as Hawaiian fish). The Indian Ocean variety are great fish too, just not quite as colorful and you can never be just how they're caught & handled. The pic on this site is an Aussie; but they sell the I.O. variety. I notice some tusks coming from Bali (part of Indonesia)now. Even though this is still the I.O. variety; the pics I've seen look almost like an Aussie.
These are pretty much summer season fish, so better hurry if you want one this year.

I was so proud of my Harly the other day when he actually chased my little Niger away, its the first time i've seen him act tough toward any fish at all

I wasn't talking about the Tusk. I was refering to the some of the other wrasses in the coris family.
And that was still a $250 fish going for a dive...

Yeah, funny, I was in bed and heard him hit the hardwood floor in the living room. my 1st thought was ' whoops, I forgot that piece of eggcrate. I picked him up with a wet towel and he's fine. I think if he hit carpet, most of his slime coat could have been lost and I just may have lost him. (I notice the price on these guys has really gotten into the $250 price range for a big one. Usually, in mid-summer you can get a 4-5" Aussie for about $90. On sale at another online dealer.) just a little drivel; Most tusks are caught with a baited hook by divers...where is PETA?

Anything I've seen walk in lfs has been around 250+ for any aussie. I had a guy out of college station that mainly did setups that would also sell fish, but had no store front for $85 for the an aussie. I was going to buy one of them the next week until my 180 sprung a leak.

I haven't bought a fish at a lfs since I can remember. I've been buying online for years and have nothing but good things to say. Price, guarantee, delivery to your door, etc; can't beat it---IMO. Your guy in College Station sounds like a good source. I know a few folks who often buy through set up/ maintenance contractors. buying this way should eliminate 1 or 2 stressful acclimation stops for the fish.

Unfortunately he had it setup to buy fish at a very good price, but now that I've downsized and have gone reef, his contacts aren't as good.

nice title

Just trying to put a little humor into an aggravating situation. Good news on both fronts, my scorpion's eye is on it's way to healing fully although he may loose vision in it, and my wrasse was picked up by a guy I know at the lfs and is going into a 400 with triggers and angels.
all is well
