I can't give you advice on how to do it, but I LOVE my bare bottom. much easier to clean. BUT it does show off debris. Live sand hides that sort of stuff

As far as getting the sand out, since you probably don't want to move rocks/fish/etc, just siphon a little out at a time with water changes.
And I know you didn't ask for it but I'm going to give my opinion anyway lol. Getting rid of the sand is a good idea for small tanks BUT I think is looks bad. I've seen people get this thing called starboard (I think just a cutting board, which you could also use) and cut it to fit in the bottom of the tank.
The guy I saw cut it smaller than necessary and all the debris collected around the edge like a poop moat.

well i think im gunna do it, it will be sometime this week, what if i put some black background on the bottom of the tank? would that help the look of it? and i still am wondering if my nass snail and cerith snail will still be able to live?

i would stick with the sand, IMO it looks better with it. More natural looking too
+1 what mark said. i took out my sand and man i regret it! it looks nasty! the sand made it look more like a reef!
