PC Help

if you have java you might want to see if you can update it, also you should try to turn off your automatic updates because it will slow your computer down, also you can try to use disk cleanup and disk defragmenter, hope this helps, it worked for mine

I would try downloading firefox from mozilla. Internet explorer has had problems lately, and firefox seems to be an ample fix. Hope this helps.

I have the same issue with comcast. So does that mean you can't use a router??
Joe did you resolve the issue with using the wireless router?

I think it is a comcast issue with routers, and a relatively new issue too. I've been using comcast/wireless routers for years and never had this problem until recently.
Well technically I was asking Joe... but...
I've found that only the most expensive routers work really well with comcast. I had to buy a $275 router in order to get one that worked right with my service - and this was just a bare router, no wireless. The problem that starts to crop up IME with these super fast internet connections that are out there now is that the CPU in the routers are not capable of handling the amount of traffic passing through them. Even routers that say "Up to 50mpbs throughput" can maybe handle 1/5th that amount on a good day. You have to get up into the business class devices like NetGear FVS, Cisco PIX 501s, etc to get "real" routing performance. This is of course in my area. Comcast backhauls it's internet connections at many, many different points so what you see with Comcast in one area of the country may well be totally different than what you see in another.
However, if the router isn't fast enough, all it should do is cause you to experience less internet speed than your connection is capable of, but Youtube should work on all but the slowest connections.
Anyhoo, that's why I asked... if it was a low end router, that might help explain it.

Yeah, my UTube experience basically has the same problem that Joe had with his. Funny, because my previous DLink router had no problems, and it was a pretty cheap router.
The lag is problematic enough to be annoying.
So any of the routers you mentioned above will work well with comcast?

Yeah, but the only one I'd recommend of the two is a NetGear FVS338. The Cisco PIX routers are business class devices that are not designed for laypersons to work with. The FVS is more user-friendly.
Again though... this was my experience where I live. Actual mileage may vary, offer void where prohibited.

I've never had Comcast, just Time Warner and AT&T. Does Comcast just provide a standard DSL or cable modem, and it's up to you to provide the router of your choice? My AT&T device is modem/router/wireless. I can hang another router on the back of it, but there's no benefit to it.

Comcast in my area supplies just a standard modem with an ethernet handoff. My neighbor has AT&T DSL and they gave him the router/modem that you describe.
You can get a "home networking" option from Comcast for a ridiculous $15 extra per month where they will supply you with the extra equipment you need and won't just throw up their arms and say "unsupported" if you so much as mention a router when you are on the phone with them.

Comcast is a big ripoff. When I was having modem problems, they kept saying that exactly until they got me to rent their stupid modem. You couldn't call in to say that you didn't have a connection without them looking up your account to see that you didn't rent their modem. "Sorry, its your modem and its unsupported".
Do you have a modem to recommend?

I rent mine.
The break even point is about a year, but in my area, they are far too prone to getting blown up by lightning, so I let them eat the cost of new ones.
