but i wouldn't try this with just any mantis. i've been feeding mine with a stick that started at 12" and has been getting shorter every month. but i don't think i'll do it again.
Thanks for the compliments everyone. Here is a video clip of him working. I added a piece of LR rubble and well..... just watch the clip. Wade's Mantis
That clip is cool....say, you think I can borrow that little guy to aquascape my tank? He looks like he is getting his rocks in there pretty tightly.....ha ha
I love your mantis!! Could you tell me a little more about the setup you have him in? Do you have live rock? How deep is his sandbed? What kind of skimmer and filter do you have going? I saw a mantis at the lfs the other day and they are cool! I really want one, but I need more info on what kind of setup they need. Those pics are GREAT by the way!!! :joy:

Hey there Jenni
I have him in a custom built 19 gallon acrylic tank with an emporer 400 filter. No skimmer. I put power compacts lights on it so I can add some corals. As far as live rock goes, I have a couple small pieces and alot of tonga branch rubble so he can build his burrow the way he wants. I feed him everything hermits, turbo snails, nassarius snails and he loves peppermint shrimp. They definately don't need live food though. You can wean them to eat silversides or other frozen foods. They can live in sub-par water conditions however I read they dont tolerate changes in salinity too well. He has a ton of personality. Let me know if there are any other questions you have. I will do my best and The JOP is very knowldgeable with Mantises too!!
Awesome, thank you for your help! Sounds fairly easy I guess. Now I just have to convince my boyfriend that I need one! You said you have yours in a 19 gallon, but would he be okay in a 10 or 12? I loved the video too. How cute! He builds his own little den! They are so cool looking! I'm jealous! lol
I don't know about a 10 or 12g for a Peacock mantis shrimp. Other mantis shrimps can be housed in that or even smaller tanks though. Here is a great list of mantis shrimps that a researcher at Berkely has put together. It has everything you need to know to house the certain mantis you have. http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthrop...raca/royslist/
Good Luck!

A little too "National Geographic" for me.....you buy these animals as food? :scared:
He is sooo beautiful! The coloration is perfect. I've got a mantis tank set up right now, but haven't found the perfect one for me yet. Hope to soon :joy: BTW, did you get him online or in person? I'm leery of buying live animals online...
beautiful, how much did you pay?, my lfs has 2 of them that are about an inch or two, for 13.99$. i wunt to buy one, i have about 3 ten gallons just sitting in my closet, but they're glass, and the guy at my lfs said they strike at the power of a 22-caliber shotgun when they're full grown.
