How would I go about drilling. I know what its supposed to look like when finished but not how to get there. I mean like how would I know the correct size hole to drill. Where could I find or how would I make a, nice, looking overflow. Yah know. Is there a walk through on this site anywhere?

Heres what you do... forget the whole thing and send it to me via UPS, I will pay for shipping and send you a few frags for trade..... he he he LOL....

Wish I could help ya out with it... However If I were you I would load that bad boy up with a 6 bulb fixture of HO-T5 lights, Aquatinics or Teks you would be able to hold anything you wanted no chiller.

Peef, PM Dennis210, he can give you the specifics on drilling, hole sizes etc. He and I have had 6 20 gallons and 2 55 gallons drilled, and this weekend we're having a 120 drilled. I strongly recommend finding a good glass shop that will do the drill for you, rather than drilling it yourself - it'll cost you a little more, but worth it IMO. I agree with Bone, and while its empty and sitting is the time to have it done.

Right on! Get a glass shop to do it or someone with experience and you trust. You could do it yourself if you have the tools, but you would be seriously upset if you cracked the tank or something. Two 1.5" holes would probably be ideal and then get bulkheads with 1" ID (internal diameter) holes for your drain and return. Shoot for a return pump that will deliver ~400 GPH when factoring the head height (how many gallons per hour the pump pumps against the resistance of gravity straight up).
You don't want your return rate to be too high. It makes rigging your sump so much more difficult battling noise, micro bubbles, drain failure, etc. With a nice slow return you will have no problem rigging up a nice refugium below your tank and placing your protein skimmer anywhere you want down there.
You can search and buy overflow kits which are a quarter of a cylinder that you can silicon glue into the corner of your choice where you drill your holes or you could go with a center overflow which would be half a cylinder and you could have your holes drilled in the center.
Have fun man! Setting up a big tank is a challenge, but it is a lot of fun at the same time.

You read my mind with the T5 lighting. I am in the market right now. I just have to wait to see how much it is going to cost my wife and I to move into the new house! Then its on like Donkey Kong.....I am a dork sorry.

Sweet, I will do that. Thanks so much. I will post all the progress on this thread and greatly appreciate input even if it is telling me I am doing something wrong! Thanks again.

Is there a particular site or brand of overflow kit that you would reccommend? How would I go about figuring out the size of ballast to put in vs. the drain vs. the return?

Be careful about the drilling. Lots of 55gls are tempered and many have broken them as the sides are not marked like the bottoms. If the manufacturer is labeled on the tank contact them beforehand and ask if that specific tank is tempered.

There are no labels of any kind that I can see on the tank. Would a glass shop be able to tell me if it is or not? Or is there anyway that I could tell myself?

If there are any scratches or chips then it is not tempered. If it is new and scatches or chips are unlikely there is a test you can preform with sunlight and polarized sunglasses or the polarizer filter of a camera. Unfortunatly I don't remmenber exactly how to do it. Something to do with angleing the glass towards the sun so you get a good reflection in it, then take the polarized glasses or filter and look through it while turning the filter untill the reflection is gone. You then look to see if there are crosshatches visible, but I don't remember if that is for the tempered or annealed. You could test against glass you know is tampered and glass that you know is not. Sliding patio door and 10gl tank for instance. Luck.
