Sexy shrimp
Sexy shrimp
1 nass, 2 asterina
1 red mythrax or green if you wish.
A sexy shrimp on a frogspawn or hammer would look pretty awesome. Make absolutely sure you put him directly on the coral or else he may be gone forever.
Tank looks great! I like that your going lidless now. :)

THANK YOU!
I love hammer coral, but won't get that until after christmas when I upgrade my lighting.
I just had a flashback and realized that I absolutely loath astrea snails. I am rethinking and considering a couple of cerith snails.
Sexy shrimp suit my personality. I am also throwing around the idea of getting two shrimp. If I get a fish, then this won't happen. There is still a lot to figure out with this tank!

Give a curly Q anemone and a pistol shrimp some thought
I'm not a big fan of the curly Qs either, but I'll give the pistol shrimp some thought. I used to own one and loved it. He set up shop in a place that was easy to see from the front of the tank. My concern would be if he decided to hide in a crevice that was not so easy to see. Like snake mentioned with the sexy shrimp, I wouldn't want to lose this guy forever. But they are beautiful and telling people how their snapping generates the heat of a thousand suns is really fun (especially when you exaggerate).

Ugly brown anemones. I was never a fan. However, they are cheap and hardy.
Ugly brown?? Well I guess beauty is in the eye of the hobbyist. Although they can get rather plain looking if one does not have decent water quality. A nice thing about the symbiotic relationship between Curly Q and Pistol is that the anemone tends to stay where you place it this gives you the opportunity to place it in a vantage point where you can see both shrimp and anemone working together.
This is a pic of the two I have had for sometime.

That is easily the most beautiful one I have seen. I could also potentially create a symbiotic relationship with a pistol shrimp and a goby.

A maxi-mini? I know I'm small, but I have a heavy flow...
That might have been a tad too inappropriate.
In all seriousness, I love the way maxi-minis look. 2 sexy shrimp: That is pretty high up on the list right now. It's either that or one sexy shrimp and a yellow clown goby. I will get a solid plan down soon. Perhaps the most difficult part of this hobby is figuring out what will look nice together. I don't want my tank to look like a rainbow of colors or to have 100 different species in it. "I think I'll just get one more frag" is a thought that could ruin this tank.

Have you checked out the green banded goby? They look great.
I had not considered that one! Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to keep this in mind. I was looking into a yellow clown goby mostly because yellow is my favorite color. But I have to consider everything I want together and not individually, so it may be that the green banded goby will look better in the tank. My heart melts regardless of what species of goby I look at.

Okay, new question (and no making fun). Since macroalgae seems like an impossibility, how absolutely ridiculous would it be to run a little turf scrubber or in-the-stand refugium on this little tank?
What about an upflow filter with some chaeto?

Dude,... your tank is small. You don't need macroalgae or a scrubber to keep a clean tank. Water changes alone is good enough....

I'd not worry about it until you get some things going in your tank and water changes alone aren't keeping up. If you have one small fish and you do a one gallon water change per week, you're doing more for your system then you think.

You're right. Thanks for the reassurance. It feels weird running this tank with such little filtration, that's all. I threw out the sponges and added some filter floss. I like filter floss much better. It seems like no matter what I do I can't clean sponges completely. Filter floss I just chuck and replace. I'm also running some phosban. I just need to keep telling myself that if worst comes to worst, I will do a huge water change. It's funny. I call it a huge water change, but even the smallest water change I did on my other nano was twice as large.
Then there's the fact that this tank is definitely not 4 gallons. It is so much less than that, especially with the rock.

If you want a cheaper alternative to filter floss, try some acrylic felt in the quilting section. It's what I am using for my filter floss now - and I am loving it!! I think it's like 2.5ftx20ft of felt and you just use scissors and cut it into the shapes that you want. It's also much thinner than the blue and white bonded filter media, which may work better for your sump.
I'd definitely get a refractometer if you haven't already.
