imo it is not wise to use ph downer in a tank that you are planning to use very soon, as in my experience it depletes the oxygen levels, and if you put anything in there it to soon it may (and probably will) suffocate. as i found out with my breeding pair of discus i wanted to get them in the tank as soon as possible to prevent the other fish eating the eggs.i had put the ph downer in and put the discus in about a half hour after they both died as of depleted oxygen levels. i learnt the hard way this post is here to prevent you from learning the hard way and having your fish die.

I don't quite follow how that would deplete oxygen. Isn't the active ingredient Phosphoric Acid or is there a different kind?
I would have been more inclined to just throw some peat into the filter to soften the water.

well it seems thats what happened the oxygen levels depleted and i noticed the fish were breathing very fast so thats my guess
