My electric eye scallop is hiding behind my live rock. I can't reach him to tube feed him. If I pour it in the tank will he still be able to feed? How much should I be putting in? I have him and 2 anenomes.

I wouldn't rely on him getting enough just by adding the phyto to the tank water. Can you move him back out??

I tried that once and he went right back there. I even pushed the rock as close to the back as I could and he still squezed back there.

Can you get a long airline hose attached to a syringe back there? Thats what I use trying to feed hard to reach corals/inverts.

File Clams prefer to live in the back of a dark cave. If you move it out where you can see it then it will expend precious energy attempting to get back into the dark.
Target feeding them can clog their filters and they'll again, have to expend precious energy expelling the clots of food.

good to know. How much should I add. I've been adding a cap full everyday just to be on the safe side. Is that to much?

Phyto is tricky to dose. It's loaded with nutrients so if you dose too much you'll end up with an algae bloom. The best option is to start small and slowly increase the dosage over time.
As Reefnut pointed out your Clam may not get enough to eat back in a corner, but if you pull it out it will just scoot around until it finds a corner again. They are not easy animals to keep and I have no real answer for you. They typically starve in aquariums after 9 - 12 months. There are people that have kept them longer so if they have suggestions for you I'd suggest listening to them above anything I have to say.

Being my anal self I don't think the money is the main tragedy with the sale of these and other hard to keep animals... you could consider returning him. If not, hope it works out!!

If you feed the tank phyto then the clam should be able to filter it out of the water.
Agreed, You dont see God in a wet suit diving into every cave to hand feed his scalops LOL!!!!!!!
also, what Brand of Phytoplankton do you use, If its DT's Live Marine Phytoplankton then you dont need to worry about excess, because its living and is used up by the microfauna, corals, etc.....
if its like Kent Phytoplex then its preserved phyto and you can overdose and the dead phyto will cause excess algae, bacteria blooms and all kinds of bad bad stuff!!!

Kind of a silly analogy given the completely different environment the scallop is in...

HHHHmmm, wellll, not since the late 60's or early 70's anyway, ...and then there's that tricky TriMix I keep trying to work with in my tanks...
But, I do see the point. I have two Flame Scallops, and the information I have, is they won't last that long either. BUT... I would let them move where they want to, right from the beginning, and just leave em be... Both of mine, have wedged themselves in dark cave areas out back. They don't move...they just keep their beards in the wind and catch what they want.. (sort of a ZZ Top type thing...) I do feed a little filter food to the whole tank. They seem undisturbed and happy (as a clam) where they are, so I leave them alone...
I'll tell ya what happened to them next year... (but I don't lose sleep over it...)

Fact is most of these critters die in our systems so joke or not it's still a silly analogy.
and I agree... , some people!....

I'm sure he's just Wise and not old.
LMAO - your God remark. I think to this affect all the time.
I use Dt's Plankton and I love it. Start out with the reco'd dose and gradually work up to a higher dose. Especially if you have lots of Plankton loving creatures.
