254 watts of PC's on the 5" and 275 watts of PC's on the 4". They are placed basically the highest they can go in the tanks.

Very nice clams. I also have a deep passion for clams. I currently have 8 in my 180 and now in the process of setting up a 60gal long clam tank.
Here are some of my clams. :)

Nice clams Bigred, I noticed you said you have 18 or so corals and a flame angel. Does your angel not nip at the corals, I was really wating to either get a bi-color or flame angel but everyone has told they will kill corals.

Catera, The lfs I went to ask what kind of lighting I had and said it would be fine. They asked the question because they won't sell them to a person that doesn't have enough light.
Lerch, As the Flame angel is concerned. He hasn't nipped at anything yet but I traded in a Coral Beauty that did, he cleared out my xenias.

Sweet clams man...
I have 440W on my tank, 4 110 VHO's, is this good for clams, I've never even thought about getting one. What are their benefits, besides how beautiful they are, anyone? <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

Nice mottled colors. How much did you pay, not that that is important. I have about a 3" derassa I paid about 60 US$ for. Doing very nice. Keep those gills tight! ;)
I'll get some more clams in my setup probably too. ;)

I payed $85 for the 5" and $65 for the 4". I didn't think that was to bad. I ordered 4 from ffexpress.com, 2.5-3" 2 for $29 somoan blues.

Bah what depth is your tank? Clms zooxanthellae need light, yes, but they need other things as well, and will show you as they move about the tank. LOL
My derassa is doing fine presently in a 45 hex (18-24" deep -- I forget), with only 110 watts of pc (one 10k, one act03) -- the othetr light givving me fits.

That sounds like a great price.
One of my LFS SELLS MAXIMA LIKE STARTING AT 75 FOR MAXIMA, 30 FOR DERASSA ( 1 1/2 -2" GIANT CLAMS).

yOu'll have trouble keeping him at the top.
. . .a trick I read about somewhere is to take a flat shell, place some sand in it, and put the clam on that. My clam was on a rock with attachments here and there (long story about movement), then decided he liked the bottom better. Try the shell and sand method if you want to keep your clam near the lights, I haven't yet.

I have noticed a couple of tanks have them at the bottom in the sand. One of the clams I have has is rock attached to his foot. Also I have heard they will attach to a peice of tile if you put it in the sand.

If you need/want/have to cut a clam free use a trazor far from the clam as possibl;e to prevent injury/death to the clam. This is the byopssus (sp?) muscle, and is how the clam makes it's life. NEVER roughhouse your clam. ;)
