Interesting... they just give it to you for free? Do you have to bring it back?
No, I do not have to bring it back, but I typically give them the fish back (it's typically sick tangs). I have built up a rapport with some of the people, and I can just guilt them into giving me the fish if it's not doing well. I don't do this anymore though because the LFS have been quite disappointing in selection and I get better orders online.

No...when I purchased my 120G from this couple that I found on craigslist. They already had fish in the tank. 1 blue hippo, 1 yello tang, 1 coral beauty, 1 oscillaris clown, 1 gobie and 2 damsels. They all looked healthy when I checked them out at the people house. Then when I moved the tank over to my house it stressed them out and both tangs broke out with Ich. So I tried the Hypo method but I wasn't having any success (my fault). So as what I thought at the time was a last resort I decided to try one of those so-called reefsafe treatments. It was basically low dose formaldahyde. Well I didn't know better and it never said anything on the bottle about how it lowers oxygen levels in the tank. I turned my air off to the tank one night and forgot to turn it back on. When I woke up in the morning the only thing still alive was my clownfish and goby.
I still have the goby and clownfish to this and they are doing good. About a month after the incident I chose to try another tang (my powder brown). Who looked to be in amazing health when I bought him. But when I brought him home and put him in quarantine he came down with Ich pretty bad. I decided to try the Hypo method again and to my suprise it turned out quite successful the second time around. I made some changed and was better prepared. 6 months later I haven't seen any signes of Ich, HLLE or anything else. Everyone is doing good.

Oh my. I think that type of experience would be quite discouraged. At least, the new tang, clown and goby are doing well.

It was quite discouraging. I almost convinced myself it wasn't worth it. But I started to do alot more reading and fount the fault was in myself for not being better prepared. And thanks to alot of the information that I gained from people on this site I talked myself into going on. I'm glad that I did.
