Other part of the theory is that you'll get more growth as the coral has a larger surface area for new growth to appear as opposed to just a tip. I'm doing a test right now with identical frags, both are .5 and from the same colony, one mounted horizontal and one vertical and I can already see more growth on the one mounted horizontal.
i've also heard that if you take the frag, and slice it length-wise, so you then have 2, then mount them horizontal, you will have 2x the surface area. i think that i heard this from a borneman video, or article, or thread.
