is there a way to tell the diffence in the 2?? i have a 150gal that i want to cut down to a 90.i just dont want to ruin a good tank if it ends up being tempured cause it will shatter when cut..it is and ocean veiw brand tank.and looks like some one already drilled 1 whole for an over flow so im thinking its plate..
is there any kind of test to determine what type of glass it is???
unless any one has a 90 that wants to trade?

Send an email to the manufacturer. Tanks that size have tempered bottoms for sure. The sides may be tempered or not.

Hit it with a hammer.
There is no way I would try to cut 1/2" aquarium glass because it is probably tempered.

go on craigs list in your area. if you were closer i'd for sure make that deal. why do you want to cut it up anyways?

by the way, there is supposedly a way to tell: if you get a cheapo pair of sunglasses with polarized lenses you can snap them in half and hold one lens inside and one outside of the glass you want to cut. look at the sunlight through both lenses and the glass in between and if you see a rainbow then the glass is tempered, or not tempered. i cant remember, but if you search tempered glass on this site something should come up. i asked the same question awhile ago and that's the answer i got. any way to post pics of the overflow? if it looks like an aftermarket drill-job then its not tempered.

The sunglass like said above should do the trick. Try it when you are driving and look at your side windows and then look out your windshield. you will notice like a hologram effect out the side windows. Tempered glass gives off that effect
