submerg. it is a 3/4" return hole drilled in the tank. and a mag 9.5 pump. the overflow i believe is rated for 400gph.

Don't glue anything to your pump. Since it's submerged you really don't have to worry about it being wtertight anyway. I use teflon paste on the threads.
You should have a true union and a valve (ball or gate) after the pump to make it easy to remove.
On the pressure side of the system everything should be glued. On the overflow side the teflon paste is usually enough to keep it watertight.

ok im going to depot right now.
so i need some 1" pvc, ball valve, 2 45degree angles, and teflon paste?
see the return pipe..how do i connect the piping to that? just stick it in and use some teflon paste?

It looks like the return needs to go in the side of the tank, is that right? I don't see the gasket for the bulkhead but it might just be the picture. Have you tried to dry-fit it yet?
Don't forget to get a true-union and you'll also need a fitting to convert the slip-in to a female so you can screw it onto your pump.

thank you for your help. for now i have decided to use clear flex tube instead of pvc and put a ball valve in the flex with 2 small pieces of pvc so the flex can connect to the ball valve if that makes sense...a little bit later on i will atempt to do it with pvc again but right now i just want to have this tank running!
