i tried asking this question in the disease forum with little response. i have a 25 gallon hex with 3 fish. 2 blue chromis(1 small,1 large) and a very small tomato clown. when i turn the light s on in the tank in the morning it looks like the 2 chromis have ich. they have the salt like grains on thier bodies, but after a while it disappears. with no sign of anything. they are not rubbing against anything, or breathing heavy. and they are eating fine. i have left the aquarium light on all day and night for 5 straight days with no sign of anything. then on the 6th night i shut the lights down for the night and first thing in the morning, the salt like grains are back. i dont understand whats going on. anyone know????

i know that i can still soak the food in garlic, but is this common for ich to disappear and come back only when lights are off and come back on? this is a very strange situation. anybody else encounter this problem?

every once in a while my fish seem to do that, especially the ones that hide behind or in the rock at night, it is only present for less than an hour, so i really doubt it is ick, especially since we have had those some fish for over 5 months(in this tank), by now it should have really showed up by now, if it were ick, and i would not leave the lights on 24/7, it could be asking for an algae problem

damsels and chromises are a good example of what fish do at night. alot of fish change there color to be able to blend in with surrounding things so that preditors will not see them if its only there when you turn your lights on in the morning I wouldnt worry about it thats the camo instinct. I have several damsels and chromis that lok like that when the lights come on and disappear soon afterwards. all have been alive and doing well for many many months..
tangs are wild when the lights come on they have a strip that runs the middle of there body that turns brown with a bright white strip that runs through it . kewl looking

Sounds like Michael has some good thoughts on this... Hopefully that's all it is...I'd still feed garlic once a month or so...It will not hurt your fish..only boost their immune system.

the same things happened with my green chromis. Their body isn't as green it should be, it almost looks kinda like a brown coat. as the light stays on, the chromis is back to its normal green coloring
i can't really explain it but my chromis have the same problem
i hope that i've helped :D

i left the lights on as an experiment. i wanted to see if the salt like grains came back on the fish, which they did not. only when the lights are shut down for the night. as far as them changing colors, that is noth the problem , i know that chromis and damsels do that in the dark. my problem is the ich like apearrance.

Elk,
I don't know if this is the answer, but when I turn out my lights my damsels turn white in spots on their back. One of them turns completely white and the other spotted. At first I thought they were sick, but going back to what MichaelAR said I guess they just blend in to their surroundings. I think if it was ich you would see it more than just night.

when they get these spots at night they can look like salt or sand or big blotches of it but I have had all of mine do this. I also beleive if it was ick you would defentaly see it during the day ick is a type of parasite that just dont disappear in a matter of hours a few days yes but not hours ick goes through different stages and I beleive that it takes a few days between its changes.( maybe wrong but I think thats what I read somewhere.)

its probably just sand. every morning my tang is covered with spots and hes pale in color, whitin an hour or so they are gone and his color is back. i thought it was ick at first also but that doesnt go away that fast. my chromiss change color also from real pale grey to bright green.

PEOPLE!!! READ WHAT I HAVE SAID. I DONT HAVE SAND IN MY AQUARIUM. ITS CRUSHED CORAL. AND I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPOTS AND SALT GRAIN LIKE APPEARANCE.I KNOW THE SPOTS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BUT WHEN I SPRINKLE SALT ON MY FRENCH FRIES IT DOESNT LOOK LIKE SPOTS.i have seen ich before and it totally looks like ich. but i'm puzzled because it goes away until i have the lights off at night
