I just started a tank (55 gallons) after visiting my local shop and talking with the head of the aquarium staff I bought sand and salt. i filled my tank as directed to check for leaks after that i took out about 1/4 of the water and added the sand also as directed, and now my tank is completely clowdy and has been for almost a day. i have the filter running and i don't understand. if anyone could help me please.

its very normal for this to happen place carbon filters on a your tank this will reduce and eventually eliminate the cloudiness.it may take a few days depending on your filter system

I take it you have an emporer or penguin filter?i have tried both types and was not at all impressed by either one for sw .if you have the means to do so I reccomend an aquaclear hang on filters if hang on is what you want.I ran my 6 ft 125 aggressive with 2 aquaclear 300(70's) and an aquaclear 900 powerehead for 3 1/2 yrs with no problems at all from water quality.they have 3 different types of biomedia unlike the others sponge ,carbons and ceramic bios i changed the carbons once a month and cleaned the sponges alternating also once a month my nitrates never topped 20 with 25% water changes weekly.

Did you just add your sand without rinsing it? If so it's gonna take a while to clear. I don't think the other responders noticed that part. I also had this problem (even with heavy rinsing before putting it in the tank). On top of the other suggestions I would suggest you buy some .50 micron filter pads, it's about 9 bucks and there's enough to make 4 of them, plus they're reusable. You'll have to change them out probably twice a day at first as they clog up, just rinse them off and you can use them again.
Finally, my water was clear but still dusty for almost 2 months, and then suddenly last week it attained crystal clarity overnight. That's how it happens.
