a 2 degree drop isn't terrible but I would suggest setting your heaters a couple of degrees higher to keep the temp more stable at 82.

so if the water stays at 82 with the lights off, what is going to happen when the lights come back on wont it make the water temp go up even higher .. I feel like I am going round and round with this

I think he's wondering if the heat from the lights would increase the temp of the water beyond what the heaters have it at.
I'd like to know also....do the lights give off enough heat to raise the temp. of the water?
Thanks Bang. :D

If you water is staying constantly 82F with lights then raising the heater up will only affect it at night. Your heater won't run if you temp is higher than what it is set at. So if you heater's thermometer is accurate and you set it at 80F, it won't kick on until it is lower than 80F. Personally I wouldn't consider adjusting the heater if you are only getting a +/-2F temp difference. I have read that it is better to have a temp swing of a few degrees so that in case your heater malfunctions your livestock will be able to handle it easier.

the heat from the MH lights makes the water temp go up, I have the heater set at 80 mid day when the lights have been on for a few hours the temp of the water is about 82 i have a fan to pull the hot air out but it isn't doing what I thought it would to keep some of the heat from the tank ..

Turn it around and blow cool air "in and down" across water surface, you will notice a dramatic lowering of your temperatures ...
The hot, moist air will find a way out through positive pressure, but if you add a few "vents" at the top it'll draw heated ambient air from around the lights as well..
This is a continuing contraversy, with fan placement in hoods, but if you think about it...In the summer time, when it's hot...which side of the fan do you stand on...the side that's "sucking" or the side that's "blowing"...??

Absolutely. His tank has already proven that his lights can heat the water to 82F. Raising the heaters to 81-82F will not change that. The light will still only be able to heat the water to 82F.

That's because air really can't hold a lot of heat. Your MH bulbs are adding heat to the water, the amount of heat added to the air in the canopy is insignificant so removing the air does almost nothing.
I agree with Squidd. If your goal is to cool the water then point the fans so they blow cool dry air across the surface of the water. If your goal is to cool the air in the canopy then what you are doing will accomplish that. I'm sure the air in your canopy is a lot cooler the way you have the fans. Turn them around when you're ready to cool the water.
