well heres some from when he was in the bag. you can't see his orange in these pics but when he fans out along the top ridge is orange not yellow. so from everything gathered so far hes more gold rim then anything else except for the orange. the sailfin however is not enjoying the new company in that bag. so let me know guys. i will post more when i finally get him in the tank later tonight.

Gold rim. they usually have an orange border along the edge of the dorsal fin. Powder browns have them too but they are large and obvious. Gold rim you have to look for it to notice it. Even as I type I cant help but swear it looks like a Gold rim/powerder brown hybrid

I was just editing that it looks like a powder brown/gold rim hybrid. I'm sitting here with a book surgeonfish rabbit fish and their relatives which has at least four photos of every indo pacific acanthurus tang known and I can see no other possibilities. Besides the powder browns. the gold rim, achilles and two variations of powder blue nothing else remotely resembles it. could be a hybrid of any of the four or just a gold rim.
thing is they have a pic of a gold rim from cooks island that is lighter than any powder brown and pics of powder browns darker than gold rims. On top of that my powder brown can go anywhere from almost white grey to nearly black depending on its mood so the body color really isn't going to help much. Powder browns dont even have a brown body. why does the store call them powder black if they are grey? probably gets alot darker than those pics when the mood strikes.

yah we will wait and see. hes got some stuff on his skin so hopefully that will go away and we will introduce him to the sailfin and all will be pals. right now they are separate, and awaiting some good signs from the powder before they are put together. right now hes in a 75 by himself. going to move him to the 46 with the sailfin so that i can quartine a bigger fish in the 75. then in 3-4 weeks release them to my 210 and have a good ole time

I also think its 100 % A. nigricans
The Grayish color could just be from stress, disease or inproper/lack of diet or region its from. Once again, good luck. They are known by even experts to be nearly impossible to keep long....But a few hobbist have kept them longer than expected. ( a few months )
