you could get a car battery and an inverter and hook up the powerheads and the heater so you can keep thinks hot and moving. that's about all I can think of.

Unless it's hot/cold out, you vodka dose, or have a sump that won't start and stop properly with power off... you will be fine. If it's cold wrape blankets around the tank to keep heat in, if it's very hot out I would take the day off to keep watch, but that's just me.
I don't have a generator and I assume you don't either. I also don't know how to rig a battery to run my power heads. However 4 hours isn't too bad for a power outage, I have had it happen in storms with no ill effects. In the dark the fish and coral go into sleep mode. So as long as everything can return to normal as soon as the power returns, I wouldn't be concerned

I agree with this, BUT in June surely you don;t need a heater
I have one of these inverters and it will run your PH on a 28 all day with no problem
YOU could probably run a fan too if you are worried about the room getting too warm

I lost my return pump for a few hours yesterday and when i noticed it my water was significantly cooler than the water in the sump where the heater is. I don't know how long it takes to cool down a tank, but I don't think its very long if its 65 degrees in the house. This and heater malfunctions have happened to me several times and every time everything comes right back to normal after a day or two so maybe its no big deal.

The tank cools very slow and the critters adapt for the chill, you couldn't keep the temp that low for more than a day. I say this because I too have had the heater go and have the tank temp drop, but it was in the winter...June..Meowzer it was 58 degrees here in Illinios on the Wisconsin boarder last night...LOL..it was 97 three days ago.

The high for Daftboy's location the 21st, is 87°, and the low is 69°.
I would run 1 modest powerhead and a fan blowing across the top of the water, off a UPS backup, connected to a car battery. And one of those bait-bucket air stone pumps (uses two D batteries),
As for the heater, the only thing is that producing heat consumes a ton of energy, and depending on the temp. a heater can drain a battery in short order.

I've lost power many times over the years, and usually it's no big deal. My tanks have survived a full day with no power, without loosing anything or getting too hot/cold. For some reason people on the main road north of me LOVE to hit the power poles, and 2 times a year or so, somebody will take one out and it's 6-10 hours in the dark, but the fishes/corals all do fine. I do not feed them for that day and just make sure everything restarts OK when the power does come on.
The only BAD deal I had was Hurricane Ike 3 years ago when I had no power for 8-9 days. My reef did great thru day 2. Day 3,4 things started smellen odd, and I pulled the fish out. kept them in buckets with battery powered air pump. Day 5&6 the tank started getting ripe, and by days 7,8,9 it had crashed and lost 90% of the corals.
But for only 8-10 hours, i'd not worry too much, with the exception of temp.I like the fan over the tank idea, but I've since bought a large gasoline generator that'll run my main DT for days, and keep 100gals gas on hand.

Where is the emerald coast?
Yeah, I wouldn't be concerned about the power outages too much.
I've been through a storm where the power was off for 2 days and everything was completely fine...

Hey...How about you start a thread complete with some pictures (I'm a see it to understand kind of person) on how to rig up something like this. Knowing how to set up emergency back up power should be a sticky. I would love to have this info on hand and I bet I'm not alone.
If something has a plug how do you make it work on a battery?

But I agree that a forum on emergency back-up power would be good.
Blah it did n't post more than one quote.....You asked what is a sticky? I don't know what else to call it.
EXAMPLE: At the top of the section of new hobbyists there is a sticky on 101 tips for starting up an aquarium. Basically it's useful info folks on the site have contributed over the years..Spanko just had a Cycling one posted up.

The one pictured in that link has a cigarette lighter attachment on it for plugging in your cell phone, laptop, or any other small electrical devices within the wattage range specified on the unit. The ones with the small jumper cables attached at a bit more hefty. You can get them at Home Depot, Best Buy, Auto parts stores ect.
I'm in sales and I run my laptop and printer off of mine through the cigarette lighter. They work great and have gotten much smaller/compact in the last few years.

All the coasts of Florida are divided up with different nicknames for different areas, Sun Coast, Gold Coast, etc. Emerald Coast runs from Panama City Beach, to Pensacola. Also known as the "Redneck Riveria." I am technically just west, in coastal Alabama. Though here, it's much more like a Florida lifestyle then Alabama. Generally sort of a stigma telling people you live in Alabama.

Sort of a case of "do as I say, not do as I do." I too have a gas generator I would breakout and hook the tanks up to if need be.
Would I am suggesting to use, is a UPS back-up battery system like this . It's sort of like a continuous inverter, that turns on automatically. Most use a small gel-cell type battery, which can power a smaller powerhead for a few hours. You don't want to plug a bunch of stuff into it, like a return pump. A Mag 12 for example, will have it drained in about 10 minutes.
For longer life, you can replace the gel-cell battery, will a car battery. Plenty of links on youtube;
