WELLLLL...about 7:30 p.m. the power went out..yikes....About 20 minutes later I was able to reach the power company and some main transformer thing broke....well they said about an hour...HAH...2 hours later I told my husband I think we should get the generator ready....well we got it running at 10.....got the extension cords ran...picked oout which items I wanted plugged in immediately....was just about to plug in the sump power box to the 225 and WHAMMMMMM POWER IS BACK ON....

I think the fish got a little freaked cause they went from lights...to pitch black...to lights.....so I quickly re-adjusted all the timers, and they are now under their moonlights....
I am guessing they will all be fine....

p.s......I did find out my sump would overflow 3/4's of a gallon
good thing this happened with me here...so we had to adjust an inlet pipe (so my husband says) BUT after adjusting the pipe, the water stopped rising

IDK about this stuff.....(shaking head)

I had a similar event happen to me, they were doing construction down the street from my house and they needed to shut down the electricity for 5 min. I didnt know this was going to happen. Well i was minding my own business when the lights go out and my sump starts to get filled with water very fast. Thanks to good measuring the sump filled all the way to the top without overflowing. At that point i realized i needed a backup supply. I bought an external battery to supply power to the pump that leads from the sump to the DT, one power head in the dt, and the temperature controller for the heater and chiller. It works great, as soon as the power goes out, those three items still keep working. Highly recommended.

Glad it all worked out...give hubby a hug...if that happened to me, I would be stuck because I don't know about that stuff either, and there is no man here to help...

Curious here. I have had my power go out for several hours. About 6 and I didnt worry cause I knew it was short term. When it kicked back on no problems with either my fresh water or salt water tanks. When is it time to worry cause at 6hrs I still wasnt worried and I wasnt seeing any stress on the fish.

That's a great question.....I was worried after 5 minutes..LOL...NO not really.....BUT Since I was not sure about the amount of time before the fish could get affected...I figured by 3 hours I would have back up going....
BTW...all is fine this morning (PHEW)

most tanks should do fine with power outage of less than 10 hours. my power goes out 3-4x per year, due to wind and sucky powerline in long island.

I have a battery powered air pump. When the power goes out, it kicks in and gives me airation and water movement. The last power outage for me (and only the second time) was 14 hours. A tree took down the pole a block from my house. I didn't worrie cause there isn't anything I can do except wait. I had no ill effects on my tank. The batteries lasted the entire time too. I have plans for a clever backup power unit. Maybe some day I will build it.
