Why didn't you just post that then....you could have put what you did and than asked what others did that was different.
Because I was looking for alternative answers, creative replies.....I dont usually take the easy way out....Im hard headed

To be honest, I don't know what I'd do. The only power outages that I've had to go through are "brown-outs" due to high electricity demand when it's too hot during the summer and everyone is running their air conditioning.
I like the idea of the inverter and will have to look into getting a couple of those (probably the one that hooks to the battery).
I've been thinking about the battery powered pumps but wondered if those really did anything.
If I needed back up air, I've got 8 scuba cylinders sitting in my garage along with some easy breathing regulators that can be 'de-tuned' so that the air just slowly trickles out the mouthpiece into the water.
My husband rarely says no to me, but I can't imagine him letting me buy a generator.

Original post was as follows..........I realize this may be a day late and a dollar short for some hobbyists. I live in South East Ohio and about a week and half ago most of this part of the state was without power...I was without power for almost 3 days some people around here went without for six days or more. I was lucky I only lost one fish and that was only because I couldn't find him in the dark. I kept my tanks on life support the whole time. My question is for some of the more advanced hobbyists, what would you do in times like this? How do you keep your tanks going...And let's not pick the easy one(generator). I think this well help the new hobbyists in the long run.

Why would I have to ask for directions when I know where I'm going at all times, even if I never been there before...Even if I was lost I know where I am.

Depending on tank size, it is a good idea to have an inverter that runs off your car cig lighter...I have 2...One that runs off my car cigarette lighter, that will maybe run a small pump, and a BIG one that actually hooks up to the car battery..That would run a few things....don't need gas, but need a car...LOL
And I also have a generator...I just keep 2 5 gasl jugs filled

I recomend these generators. Very ecinomical. Small backpack sized.
Carries like a suitcase.
2k watts of power for a little over 4hours on 1 gallon of gas.
If you slim down your system to necessities...it peaks at
15hours for 1gallon at 500watts, do the math.
These are great little generators.
About 1500 bucks last I checked a few years ago, but for emergency power that wont suck up gas, this is the way to go IMO.
No reason a pair of 5 gallon jugs cant last you a few days at minimum, that's on a full load.

I bought two car batteries and a power invertor. We charge the batteries with a charger that we have every so often to keep them full. I can usually manage for some of our longer outages with this. Clearly only plugging in neccesaties.
Get an invertor that doesnt run off of the car and can just be hooked up to a self standing battery, then you don't have to worry about the car.

I love how you say, not the easy way. When is the last time you went into any project and said, geez, I'd sure like to do this the hard way. We have all become dependant on electricity and if you are stuck without it the only thing you can do is make your own. I live in NE Ohio and if I have learned anything here it is to have a separate power source. During the outage we had last winter/spring I ran my generator day and night for 6 days. I kept two 5 gal tanks filled from a gas station that had power. (I of course had these gas cans stolen when gas was $4 a gallon :) }If you are so worried abut not having access to gas, get a generator that can run off natural gas. Generators are not that expensive, I bought mine off eway a few years back, was run like one time and I got it for 2/3 the cost of it new. For the price some people pay for a skimmer you can have a portable generator that can power most of you home. The idea of a convertor is great, except again, when you run out of gas what do you do? And if you have to go get gas you need a second car to continue to run the convertor. More food for thought, you can convert a gas generator to run off natural gas, propane and gasoline.

That is why we have back up (car) batteries for our inverters....so IF we have to go get more gas we have a battery to use...although I highly doubt that turning the power off while going to the gas station would be a big deal....I think it is a GOOD idea to have BOTH generator and inverter...
