???Preparing Food

When I thaw food for my seahorse...he only eats a little at a time. So when I thaw a cube mysis and add enhancer the amount is equal to 15 to 20 feedings. In order to prevent over feeding, water contamination, and wasted food. Which of these options are feasible, and what would work best?
Feeding Schedule:
8 am, 10 am, 2pm, 6 or 8 pm
How many days can I safely leave prepared food in the frige?
Can the food be left sitting out all day on the counter? Or would it be best to refrigerate it, and warm to room temperature before feeding again?
The food would be thawed and mixed for at least 12 hrs a day. Would this cause the food to spoil or become unpalatable to the fish?
:notsure:
Thanks

If it were me I would mix the food with enough RO water to fill an Icecube tray. Then make icecubes with it. When feeding just drop in an icecube and you know you have the correct amount of food.
When thawing food it's best to thaw it in the refrigerator to avoid bacterial growth.

Great idea Bang
I'll do that. LOL
Now I back to mixing food like I did for my iguanas!!!!! 20 plus veggies 2 hour prep time! I froze the food in ice cube trays!!!
hmmmmm.....now I have to find ice cube tray with cubes that hold just 1/4 teaspoon of liquid!!!

I think you missed part of what Guy was saying. Put your 1/4 tsp of food in and fill the rest with RO water.

"duh........ah George????"
" Yea Bob? Ah.....how much is a teaspoon?"
" GEE I don't know Bob........ABOUT THE SIZE OF YOUR BRAIN!!!!!"

You know, women's brain are weird things sometimes. You'd think that we could wrap our minds around fact that 1+1=2, but noooooooooo that's far too simple...first we have to call 2 friends to discuss the matter, call 2 more friends to confirm their ideas, and then call our mothers just to be double sure.....THEN 1+1=2

I would think that just enough water to cover the food would prevent it from getting freezer burn. My wife does the same with bell peppers when she doesn't use a whole one or just wants a small amount.

I had 2 green iguanas
Goliath, the younger one was male.....I had to find him a new home when I found out I was pregnant with Aria
Dragon was female....i had her for almost 5 years
She was my favorite. She traveled with Brian and I to Richmond Virginia when Brian got a new job there. She, along with goliath who was a tiny hatchling then, both had first class seats on the sunny warm dashboard all the way to Virginia. I took Dragon with me everywhere, although she was not always welcomed everywhere!!!! She loved to go on walks and ride in my husbands covertable...I have a pic of her with he tongue flying in the wind just like a dog!!!! I took her on a family day trip to Norfolk beach!!!! The beach was loaded with people and their pets even though there was a HUGE sign the specifically said NO PETS ALLOWED!!!!! Dragon and I played in the surf, basked in the sun, and we shared a fruit dish for lunch at a outdoor cafe.....after that~ worn out from a fun day, just like a toddler, she fell fast asleep on my shoulder.
As we were exiting the beach a police officer on a bicycle road over to me and got off his bike and approached me. Even though this guy was built like Arnold Schwarzenegger, I could tell he was terrified of my sleeping beauty. He wouldn't get any closer than 4 feet, but he proceed to tell me that my...~he stuttered~..a pet....is not allowed on the beach....as yet another dog past by....if we had not been heading home I would have laughed my ass off and gave him the third degree about the way he was reinforcing the so called "NO PETS ALLOWED" rule......but I just smiled and stepped towards him just to see him flinch again..and said "No problem officer, we were just leaving!!!!"
Dragon was litter pan trained, would come when you called her, I have a pic oh her curled up sleeping in a warm sunbeam nice and comfy on the backs of her furry cat friends( I had 4), and when I took her for walks she would always try to climb up trees when she thought I wasn't watching. I'd say Dragon.....no. She'd look back at me give my little googoo eyes as if to say "Who ME?????" and then we would continue on our walk.
She met a sad horrible death do to a incredably stupid vet who's clinic claimed to be exoctic pet specialists. What the vet claimed to be malnutrion(which I knew was a load of bs) he claimed all she needed was calcium shots. Dragon took those shots like a trooper too. Every night before I put her to bed I would give her her shot. She would sit quietly on my lap squeeze her eyes shut. As the mysterious ailment grew worse I would hold her until she feel asleep in my lap. I knew she liked the comfort.....
The last day she had a horrible seizure....I know about these because I have had them too. Her color, once a beautiful healthy spring green, was now a dull green gray. I rushed her to the pet sobbing all the way. They rushed her into the back...I will never know what they did to her, but when they brought her back out I thought she was dead. Here skin was now a charcoal gray.....the vet handed her to me and said "She'll be fine". As I closed the car door with her in my arms, she took her last breath and was gone. I was mortified! I ran back into the vet clinic sobbing a screaming.."THIS IS FINE!!! SHE IS DEAD!!!!" The vet assitants took her from me and rushed her in back again. The vet emerged after completing an optopsy. Her eggs in her uterus...had not been reabsorbed which normally happens when the eggs have not been fertilized....the eggs had rotted poisoning her to death. If the vet had taken a simple xray, he could have confirmed this and avoided the whole thing with a simple operation to spay her. Dragon is the only pet I have ever had cremated. When my mother took a trip to china I requested that she brind back a beautiful urn with chinese dragons decorating the urn to seal Dragon's ashes in. The vase my mother purchased was perfect. Dragon sits in a place of honor on a shelf just right to my 90 gallon tank.

Sad story. that is a common ailment in female bearded dragons too young to breed that get prgnant anyway, or dont have a suitable laying area when ready. Zeke my iguana sends his best

Beautiful ig!!!!!!
Dragon never shared cages with a male. I did some research after her passing and disovered that the problem with female igs stems form inter breeding in captivity. With out proper breeding the egg cycle in many, many female igs began to fail. That main life threatening glitch is, Normally if a female is not impregnated when she is fertile her body either passes the eggs or reabsorbs them, but with the interbreeding this cycle began to fail. The unfertile eggs, instead of being passed or reabsorbed, remain in the female's uterus and eventually rot, killing the iguana through poisoning.

Always interested in learning new stuff. I havent considered breeding Igs because they are illeagle for commercial trade here and I have to have a permit just to own him. So I dont know a lot about their reproduction or disorders thereof.

Ge whiz.....man igs got a bad rap. It's not their fault either. Just stupid pet stores who don not inform buyers that they will have a 8 foot lizard from nose tip to the end of it's tail in a year!!!!!Also the stupid pet owners that ditch the little guys on the road side cause the don't want them anymore. Like camen and other large lizards that have become illeagle in many states to have as a pet....the cause was irresponsible pet owners releases the animals into the wild where they become a nusiance to people and native wild life.
Igs are awesome!!!! Best cat God ever made!!!! they can live 50 years or so if well cared for! You think they would be canivors with the sarated shark like teeth. Which is another HUGE mistake unprepared pet owners make. The vegie mix I made for Dragon had 25- 30 different vegies plus the vitamin supplements. She had free range of the house and never missed the litter box, unlike my cats!
Your ig has really nice coloration around his face. How old di you say he was?

Are you using a feeding station? I don't know that 1 cube of mysis should be enough food for 4 days.
Are you using the enhancer (which one?) as a marinade? If so, freezing it will nullify the benefit.
With seahorses, I would not advise putting frozen food directly into the tank.
Once you thaw your mysis, NEVER refreeze it. I wouldn't do that with my own food, either.
Don't leave it at room temp. Refridgerate leftovers.
IMO, treat it like you intend to eat it yourself. Pretend it is $50.00 worth of lovely tiger prawn, not "just mysis fish food". Yum?

There is nothing unsafe about thawing and refreezing food for people or for fish as long as it's thawed at a temperature between 32 & 40F.

Tiger prawn..... :hilarious
I was just guessing about the food amount
The enhancer that I use is KENT ZOEmarine, heavy spirulina Formula..provides vitamins amino acids and minerals.
As for refrigeration, I was thinking along that line~ refrigerate left overs and let it sit out long enough before feeding time to heat to room temp. Dump anything left out at the end of the day.
I add the enhancer to the mysis in tank water as it thaws.
Thanks Ponie

Honestly I dont know. Its one of the many animals I have rescued. The owner had little knowledge and less desire to tell what he knew. I rescued zeke the ig and Yuri my california kingsnake from the guy. the snake was mouse bitten badly. his entire upperlip and last 6inches of tail was all chewed up, after several weeks of warm water baths and antibiotics Yuri recovered and is still healing scars after more than 6months and 9 sheds, he will not go after live food (I dont blame him and I prefer to feed frozen anyways so it worked out) I run kind of an unnofficial rescue leauge for neglected animals. I get alot of poor health animals from a pet store that does what they can but cant do 1 on 1 enough for weaker animals, they cover vet bills and food I make the animals live. its a good deal. plus with the network of the store and many friends people are always sending unwanted animals our way (my GF and I). we usually recover the animals then try to find more appropriate homes for them. 90% of the time at no cost to the new owner. Sometimes we do charge the price of the cage and other equipment though.
