Why is the private message function not enabled on these forums? I notice a lot of people posting their Email addys in response to threads. I hope this is the proper place for this question, and apologize if not...
This is the perfect place for question like yours.
PMs were abused sometime in the past and were disabled then. I doubt they will ever be allowed again.
HOw can PM's be abused? HOw would management know what PM's had in them. They can set software to limit amount of PMs stored. Unless like on a well known Koi forum the moderators there routinley read PM's between members and if any are derogatory or unsuitable to the "management team" they up and ban the offenders. Now I am not saying SWF is or was reading folks, but I just find it interesting how PM's can be abused............thats all. Hey I agree its SWF 's forum they set the rules.....
I just wish I could swap messages with people in cases where going on about a subject would get the thread (further) off-topic. I'm on a number of forums, and often get PMed from folks I'm not really close to. In these cases, I simply give a courteous short response or ignore the user if they seem to be a troll.
I find PMing a good way to get to know people without going public with my email address. It's no big deal, I was just curious. There certainly are a ton of users on this site.
I personally think that the pm feature could be usefull, but maybe people were creating accounts and sending advertising or ---- to people, that is the only way I can think of people abusing it.
Also (off topic) what is trolling, I've heard it referred to casually, but I can't figure out what it means. TIA
Trolls are basically people with no interest in a subject who come around just to flame. They hurl insults around for fun until they are banned, because they have nothing constructive to do with their lives.
PM's could also be used by people to come here and use this forum to promote their own competing business. Since this forum is a gift from SWF to us as a community, we've got to remember they need to protect their business interests.

People can still use our emails to promote... People from this site email me quite a bit. I think PM's are great feature for any forum...why not bring them back??
How do people get your email to promote? You would have had to post your email for anyone to use it, whereas, anyone can click the PM function and PM anyone they'd like.

they can down load it from my profile... I don't mind. One person was promoting a new salt water forum. people just email me about my tank, and ask for my help.

Hmm... ok maybe I made the wrong impression. We don't have anything control over it, I was just pointing out a potential problem I saw.
As for emails, when I click on someone's email link in their profile I get a message saying "This person does not wish to receive emails, blah blah blah". Is it different for you?

Well, thanks for the info, I found it under user CP. I edited and changed my options to include the V-Card download.
Well once again I am going to show my age on this board. What is a Vcard? :notsure: And please type your reply in big letters so I can read it without trying to find my glasses.
