Problem with Nemo and Dori

The problem is when you refer to these fish this way instead of their real names people may assume that you impulsively got into this hobby based on the cuteness of animated movie characters. Please look up their real names and call them by them, and familiarise yourself with their care requirements (you should have done that before trying to keep a delicate wild animal in captivity)
Be advised that this is a real sore spot for some dedicated aquarists.

Oh, phooey.
I agree 100% with the research and while it grates a little to hear Nemo and Dorie, I say, grate away!
There was a thread about hearing "those two names" in LFS a while back. I'm afraid I was personally more irritated at the problem people had with it than I have ever been hearing a child (or parent) refer to the fish by their Disney names.
There will always be people who carefully research and plan for any pet they have and there will always be those who don't. And we humans will always have sore spots.

I agree, it irritates the hell out of me and I refuse to help anyone who calls their fish nemo or dori...makes a person sound like a bloody eejit!

I personally could'nt disagree with you more :thinking:
An assumption that is made based upon a nickname that someone refers to these wonderful creatures by does not mean that they care for them any less and or have not researched them, this may apply in some cases but not all

I fell that by making this assumption you are unfairly classifing some hobbiest (myself incuded)
I personally do not refer to my truck as a Dodge Ram 1500 etc, etc, that does not mean that it was an impulse decision to purchase or that I dont take proper care of it.
Please understand that my opinion is not ment to justify some for making the impulse decision based upon a movie, but to inform that I (and surely many others) consider all research and information before buying and still call my clowns NEMO and If I were to purchase DORI, which I have not becasue after research it would not be healthy in my 55 would still refer to these names as my children can identify with me and I feel thats a great bond to share with them

At least you know what fish they are talking about other then them saying my Clown or my Tang, Many common names are used for the same species and even the same names for different species,,,,,,,,,I rty to use the sceintific names when Im trying to make sure of exact species being discussed unless its pretty obvious to all like if its called Dory...haha,,,Used to sorta bother me too but I got over it...

I am sorry but I cannot agree more. I work at the lfs, and thankfully(i guess) that I've seen the movie, because when people need help with their fish, and if I didn't know what a "Nemo" or a "Dori" fish was, I would have no idea what they were talking about!! I mean, yes people name their fish, but if you need serious help with your fish, it is easier to understand what you are talking about when you say their real name.

I really only meant this as a "be advised" kinda thing. Although I'll admit it does kinda rub me the wrong way, I've had kids and even a grandkid so I get over it to help, but I don't think people are aware that others might not even read their posts.
I realise that people name their pets, but I wouldn't go on a bird board and say my Tweety Bird won't eat. Why don't you just say "Nemo, my tank bred Percula,...". We don't know if Nemo is a Perc, Occalaris, wild, or, tank raised, tank bred, or just some fish that a 4 year old thought was one?
At this point although I have 25 years marine keeping experience, 7.5 years in an industrial setting where I was expected identify and care for at least 1000 species, I can't help you with your Dori 'cuz I don't know what it is.

Considering the fact that even in the scientific community various names of species have changed over the years and the fact that even a planet managed to disappear just recently I don't think it matters what you call one fish or another.
More importantly IMO is to understand that this is a hobby vary much removed from the keeping of a pet in the traditional sense of the word. These are wild animals not pets.

The only problem I have with it, is when a person goes into the LFS and says their Nemo died and their fish they named Nemo WASN'T a clown. Confuses the crap out of people.

Exactly. If it annoys you that a fish is refered to as Nemo or Dori, then don't open the thread. This is the easiest, best way to handle it. I wish more people would just not open threads that annoy them instead of posting something sarcastic in the thread.
By the way, I don't know why I even opened this thread because threads like this really annoy me. I am fixing to be a hypocrit by typing this next statement.
Maybe I should start a thread called "Problem with annoying threads about people annoyed with other people who refer to their fish as Nemo and Dori."

but i agree. i don't mind if you call them nemo, dori, bloat, etc. i do mind it if you call them that on here. You call them that to your kids who don't know better...

Then shouldn't we be calling every collie lassie, and yellow bird tweety, and mouse mickey, and monkey curious george, and duck daffy, and ... well you get the point... i don't come on here and say "yuffie doesn't look so good" people will be like wth is she talking about??? just cause it's a widely known nickname, i still think it should be just that. a nickname, not what you call your fish when you need help with something...

I got into the hobby because i love animals for one .. and i love water.. I love the ocean... and i wanted to have a fish tank with a peice of the ocean for me to enjoy when i get done with a long days work. HOWEVER... i run a in home daycare and my daycare kids LOVE the "blue hippo"/Dori and they LOVE my four "perc clowns" / nemos yea all of them have the same name. I did research them and i know that my "dori" is ick prone and all of that.. however i also wanted some fish in my tank that my kids could relate with. I get SOOOO much joy when my kids come in the morning race by me to get to that tank and see "thier fish" they call it. I dont really think that it is any big deal what we call them is it? I dont see anyone complaining that i call my flame angel fish "electra" or that i call my sea cucumber "guts" Or my golden retreiver is "callie" i mean come on here... they are PETS... Haveing PETS come with names!!!!!!

no, it's not that you name your pets that's the annoying thing.. and it's not that kids call them nemo and dori, that's cute because they don't know better. It's just bothersome to see a person that's in the hobby call their fish by it's name... how are we supposed to know what they're talking about? just cause it's a widely known name? i dunno, it just bugs me...
