Agreed...it's cute with the little ones but it makes adults sound like dopes!

You can go round and round about whether or not people are overeacting or silly or whatever, but here are the cold hard facts:
Some people will not even read your thread. If just one person doesnt read your thread, and he's the one that knows what to do, you loose, not him.

You cant make others that don't like it read your posts, and they cant make you stop posting using nicknames. You can stand your ground and not use the fishes species name because you think it's silly to care, just be aware of, and take the resposibilty for your own sacrafice.

I think the real issue was that it's really annoying that people make posts asking for help with their fish and refer to that fish by the nickname they gave it rather then the species common name.

Get off your high horse.
I have noticed that you have started alot of threads about things that annoy you and how people should word their threads.
Just offer your experience to others, be helpful and quit complaining about the way people post.

ouch! i do kinda avoid the threads that have "nemo" in the title, though. I don't even think it's on purpose...

If by my high horse you're refering to things I say like " please list your tank size and fish you have so that we can help you faster" and " warning, some people wont help you if..." . This is offering my experience with trying to get help on aquatic disscussion boards.
Do you think I started a "whats a good begginer book", "whats the easiest fish" and " how to get good info at LFS" for my benefit? Have you stopped to consider that the threads you think i start about things that supposably bother me are actually intended to start a discussion about things I know bother others but that begginers dont know? Dare I ask if you learned anything from reading the responses to my posts?
For your information, I started this thread to help the people using nicknames to identify their fish get help here, knowing that they may be unaware that certain people will either refuse to help them or even read their threads.
Aren't you the one who started another thread about Yellow Tangs in a 55 because you were annoyed at how many there already were? Another YT 55 post
Sorry you were inconvenienced.

Just my opinion.

i'm with dave on this one. there are certain ways you should word your threads or you aren't going to get the answers your looking for. I don't see how any of this was meant to offend anyone, and getting upset about just seems like a waste of time if you ask me...

In the new hobbyist forum, people will continue to post as they always have. Do a search and you will see plenty of threads that go over the same thing you are talking about.
You can
until you get a hand cramp but it isn't going to change the fact that new people will join daily and not see these posts because they will drop down and no one will see it.
A much better way to do this and not, IN MY OPINION, "sound" like you are annoyed or complaining is to solicit a mod to post a sticky at the top of the forum with a list of things to include in a post when asking a question.
Such as....
If your post is about a dead or dying fish or other abnormal occurrences, then be sure to include..water parameters (Amm., Nitrite, Nitrate, Ph, Temp., Specific Gravity/Salinity, etc.......
This would be much more effective than someone posting threads like the ones you have been posting. Next week, someone else will start another thread just like this one.
Just my opinion.

I just wonder how many aquarium businesses are either in business or still in business thanks to Nemo and Dori?

It really intrigues me to see threads like this and the irritation it causes many.......The movie was great for the hobby to a point....Yes it might have caused numerous people to possibly get into the hobby, but again Dave you state your experience in the hobby and your industrial background......Again alot of people don't have that experience and trust me you didn't either when you first got involved in it and think you should really lighten up on the names.......Your not going to change it regardless of how many times you post or try to voice your opinions........

Regardless of how anyone feels about the movie, (I personally liked the movie and it was the inspiration for me to get into this hobby) it has been seen by millions. Because of that, you will have alot of people going out and buying irresponsibly. That is just the way some people are. If it wasn't clownfish or tangs, it would be something else.

I shouldnt start a thread because someone else will later?
I personally dont care what you call your fish, if I know what it is I'll help.
Just to get you guys off trying to figure out what I'm thinking and restate the issue:
Warning: If you refer to your fish as Nemo or Dori, some people will not help you. This message may not reflect the practices of the author and may be stated in a fanciful manner to evoke the truth.
