Doc Gooden and Daryl Strawberry are great calls. Those two had so much talent, and threw it all away. Sure first ballot hof'ers, but couldn't stay away from the drugs.

This could be a long list ...
- Steve Howe: LA Dodgers (Who unfortunately died a year or so ago in a car crash)
- Len Bias: drafted by Boston Celtics (Okay, officially not a professional athlete yet but still ...)
- Tank Johnson: Chicago Bears (probably qualifies as a self-destruction in progress unless he sees the light during his 8-game suspension)
- Barrett Robbins: Oakland Raiders (Although his may have been an actual medical issue, but his troubles just seem to keep getting worse)
- Jefferson Street Joe Gillium: Pittsburgh Steelers (Got so bad, pawned his two Super Bowl rings, some say for drug money. Even more sadly, died recently while apparently starting to get his act together)
- Jayson Williams: Philladelphia 76ers/New Jersey Nets ("Honestly officer, the shotgun went off accidently")

Tank Johnson has gone on record several times lately, stating this would be the best thing that ever happened to him. He swears up and down that his will spend the rest of his days doing good things. Easier said than done, but he sounds sincere. Also will only serve six games instead of eight, for good behavior.

IIRC, Len Bias indeed died of heart failure, although due to complications of severe cocaine use (Overdose, if you will), ironically celebrating his drafting by the Celtics only a day or two before.

never saw the babe play although i seriously respect his homeruns more than anyone elses the avg. llifespan of a baseball today in the mlb is less than 5 pitches back then they used them till you could not even recognise the baseball as a baseball they must of been pretty mushy very hard to hit a homerun with, and i do not know if he won any cy young or golden glove awards...tobin

I wouldn't call these self destructing. Both have been involved in controversy but both are also among the best at their position and generally pretty coveted inside their sports.
If we use this logic then you'd have to add Gary Sheffield to the list. But I really don't think popping off at the mouth or a minor scrape with the law qualifies as "self destruction". JMO
