Progress Build (WITH PICTURES)................

I have started and am completely a NEW-B to the saltwater aquarium hobby. Anyway, this is what I have been up to. I have had my tank cycling for about 6 months now. Before this 6 month period, I lost my fiance (break up) and got so depressed and just shut it down. Turned everything off.
The tank has been evaporating to about halfway down. It got alot of film on the top, and the sides of the glass, as well as the back of it were caked in dead algae. I decided to try it again, filled it back up with tap water and ran it for a while. I tested the water parameters about 3 months afterwards, and all were perfect.
I started adding liverock. As I bought more, I been building it up. I finally scraped off all of the blackish/brownish dead algae off the walls and glass. Some of it still remains in the sand.
Eventually, I bought a peppermint shrimp, 3 turbo snails, a scooter blenny, and a lawnmower blenny. All have died since except the lawnmower blenny. He's still hanging in there to this day.
In the last week, I changed the water twice. Once trying with natural spring water from a local spring that has a hose coming from under 300 feet of sandstone (bottom of a big hill on a farm). Immediately, I noticed an outbreak of green hair algae, and red slime algae. I didn't like that, so I changed the water again; partial water change, about 25% with distilled water.
Ok, so you don't care about reading; you want to see pictures....lol.....I know, I skim over text and observe pictures more so too. So here they are:
After 5 different liverock structure changes, I finally found the one I like. I made a small cave with the liverock. I heard somewhere that the fish like a cave structure. So I made a cave. I hope this works good. Any comments, please feel free to.
As you see, most of the old blackish/brownish algae is gone off the sand, and some still remains, because the the sand bed was caked in it after the first scraping. If I get a CUC, will this old dead algae kill them?

I made sure when I formed one cave, I made a small exit opening out the side of the cave too. Hell, I thought if the fish wanted to have fun swimming in and out, with 2 openings, I'm all for that.

As in the first picture, you'll notice barnicles, and large Conch Shells. The barnicles didn't grow from the sand, and there's no large crabs in the shells. I bought them in a shop in Myrtle Beach SC and thought they would add a great look to the tank. You know, make it look more authentic.

On the pictures, you'll notice that ugly dead algae from the depression period I had when my fiance left me. You'll even notice that alot of brown algae is forming again on the wall in the back. I think it's called diatom algae, and that it happens with water changes and eventually goes away. Did I understand that right?
Also, you'll notice that I AM starting to get coralline algae growing on the live rock. It was A LOT of hard work since getting it re-established again, but I think I'm doing alright. What do you think?
Please comment anything you wish to comment on.

I would try to siphon as much as the debris off the sand as possible, and get some of the snails mentioned earlier
What type of rock is that? Kinda looks like regular rocks from outside...so round and smooth

Thant one big rock is ocean rock that I got from Myrtle Beach, SC. We went on a private island tour, and this rock was in a shallow bed of sand near a reef. It had small barnacles growing on it already, and some life to it, so I thought I'd add it to my aquarium. Wednesday, I'm going to my local fish store and buying the clean up crew. I'm just afraid of them dying. I don't like to see things die (makes me feel bad) and I don't want to be out that much money as well.

it's so round and smooth....LOL....
if your water is good, you should be okay....since you have a place local...just get a few at a time....see how they do, and then add some more.....BUT I still would get the yuck off the sand best you can.....don;t forget to get some nassarius snails too....

Cool, thanx for the advice. BTW......Is the cave structure sufficient for fish life?

By the way, here's a picture of where I got this rock from. You can see my daughter and I posing out on what used to be a dock that was destroyed by the elements. This island is so private, that the person who built this dock, only was there for one docking.
Anyway, here is the picture of the rock formation, and the rock I found was about 50 yards out in the sand near a small reef:

Here's another picture of my other daughter posing on the beach.

And last but not least, here's a picture of me Salsa Dancing with a gorilla......YES!!

Love the pictures...esp. the gorilla. Some smaller fish will appreciate the barnacles. Barnacle blennies are fun to watch. We have a wrasse that sleeps in ours....that we got just a little south of Myrtle Beach
. What island did you go to? We are heading down there in 2 1/2 weeks, we always stay at a small island about 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach, quite, family oriented, but still have the activities and restarants of the larger city close by. My favorite place.
How big is your aquarium?
Welcome to the site.

Welcome to the site.
We stayed at Pawley's island. This is not where I got the rock from though. When we went to Georgetown, we took a small clipper ship called "Cap'n Rod's Tours" and went to a small deserted island that only a few people get to go to. So it was nice.
My aquarium is a 30 gallon Biocube......sorry, should've posted that earlier......lol
Thanx for the welcoming.

THAT MY ISLAND!!!!! (I only wish) I thought the jettie looked familiar. lol See my avitar? That is Pawleys. My family has been going there for 32 years now (since I was 10), unfortunately I missed a couple of years in the middle when kids were babies but we are back on track now! Luckily my hubbie and kids love it as much as I do. Interesting...my daughter and I were thinking about that tour, I was reading about it on their web site a couple of days ago. We have always used Capt. Dick's in Murrels Inlet (be nice everyone). A couple of years ago we did the Marsh tour and really enjoyed it. I think we have decided this year to do the dolphin watching trip while the boys go deep sea fishing. We are also thinking about doing the walking ghost tour at night thru Georgetown. Have you ever done that? I know it sounds silly but it is supposed to also have a lot of historial info and the buildings and homes in Georgetown on the waterfront are beautiful. Just thought it might be fun. Can you tell I love it there? It always feels like home, hoping someday it will be.
We have 2 29g Biocubes in our house (along with ALOT of other tanks), we really like the biocubes. They are nice tanks. You and your daughter will have alot of fun with it. Keep posting pictures.

Hi there and welcome....
Love the cube and the rock work. I would probably take out the sand. Siphoning it will only suck up the sand too. IMO.
You said your parameters were good? I would also recommend not using tap water, if you need to add some prime to it to rid the chlorine out of the water. Use distilled for top off or R/O.
for the most part you will see a diatom outbreak and it typically goes away that may be the brown crud at the bottom of the tank.
This is just my opinion and I hope I did not insult your intelligence Lol.....Looking forward to some new pics.

UPDATE:
Alright boys and girls, it's time to see pictures of brown hair algae. This is called diatom, correct? It exploded in my aquarium since the water change yesterday. Will it go away, and even though my water parameters are perfect pristine condition, what the hell did I do wrong again? I'm cursed with this algae problem. I know, I know, "Get the Clean Up Crew". I am getting them on Wednesday, today is only Tuesday, so tomorrow is the day.
Anyway, you look at the pictures while I sulk........ARGH!!!!!!!
I've nicknamed my aquarium, "The Septic Tank" because this algae is just rediculous......lol

My live rock have been nicknamed, "Butt Bombs" because they look like turds recently

As you can see, whatever purple coralline algae I DID have, is being taken over by this diatom algae.

Here's another Live Rock that you can still see then remnense of coralline algae underneath the ugly diatom algae. Look closely, you can see it.

Here is a picture of my exit cave. Once I get this algae under control, I thought some awesome coral would look lovely around the opening of this cave, just swaying in the current.

Diatom algae on the back of my aquarium. Yyyyyyyuuuuuuuuuccccccccckkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!

Here's a closeup of the diatom algae on my ocean live rock.

And finally, my water tests. I guess the only test that is off is the High Range Ph. It was perfect yesterday at 8.4, and today it's at 7.8. Any suggestions as to raise this back up again to 8.4?

If a magfloat is what I think it is, I have one. It's a magnetic glass cleaning wiper thingy, right? If so, I have one already, and use it to clean my glass all the time. The glass is crystal clear, but the live rock and back of it what is dirty.

OK, so here's my biggest problem. I'm trying to syphon all of this algae off the sand, and the live rock, but it's not going anywhere, EXCEPT making a big mess in the tank. It's all cloudy and mirky now, and I'm going as smooth as possible. Right about now, I wish I never would've let it get as bad as it did when I got into my depression stage.
This tank is really starting to p**s me off now.
Hey but some good news, there is alot of coraline algae growing underneath this diatom algae.
OPEN QUESTION FOR ANYONE TO ANSWER:
When I establish the clean up crew in my aquarium, will it harm them to eat the dead algae that is all over the sand bed?

hI,
Well...to start with, do you have power heads in the tank? Power heads blow the stuff off rocks and sand to be carried away by the filter. If you don't have any, get one, and if you do have one..try to reposition it for the best current. The back wall is diatoms but the fuzzy grey stuff is more like dust. Some folks blow it off with a turkey baster, but with proper water current the rocks are clear.
Also why did you circle the test results? Can you wipe it off.... because, they are reusable. The PH is at it's lowest in the morning and at it's highest in the evening before lights out. So to get a proper reading, take the PH test in the middle of the day. The critters of the CUC likes to eat all kinds of yuck, that's why we need them....it will not hurt them to eat it

Thanx for the reply......Yeah, I'm purchasing powerheads used from a private vendor, so it should be cool, they look they're in pretty good condition.......As for circling the results, I did that when I first bought the kit because I didn't know what the parameters were supposed to be, and I used it as a guide starting off. I know the parameters and amounts off by heart now and go it with my eyes closed.
Again thanx for the great feedback and reply.
