Looking to get a protein skimmer. Do any of the clamp on type do the job? I have a 55 gallon corner tank and space under tank is very limited. Don"t wanna break the bank either..wife has had it!
Also what is the diff between a protein skimmer and sump/ref? Will a skimmer do the job? again space is limited

I have a 54G corner bow front, and YUP space is very limited
I just bought a Octopus BH100ss $135.....it's a hang on the back skimmer, and size was perfect
The sump/fuge is a means of filtration....

No sump/fuge in this tank.....NO ROOM :( I have only had this skimemr for a couple of days....so it's too early for me to give an honest opinion
BUT...I did a lot of looking and asking, and ran a poll on this site....and this one won

and I don;t have a drain cup

so when it doesn't have a drain cup where does all the crap go? Or do you have to take the unit off to clean
they all come with a COLLECTION cup.....some come with a drain option
what that means is it has a hole in the side, and a hose so you can put that hose into a bigger container so you never have to worry about the collection cup overflowing

is that 2 different kinds or one, also do i still need a protein skimmer then? I am not familiar with refuge and how they work...so i put on one the tank the other under...then do i still need my fluval filter?

The sump would replace your fluval. On the equipment I listed the refuge is a hang on version. You can hang it on the back of your tank if you have the room and you dont mind the look. I have place mine under the tank hanging off the sump. The skimmer preforms a different function and most people do like to have them. Very little is required but something make life easier. I posted my 54g in the "share your aquarium" section but I dont know how to get you to that post. It shows some of the working under the tank I believe.

You could use the fuge as a HOB. The sump replaces the fluval the refuge is just another piece of equipment. Does not do what the sump/fluval does.
The purpose of the sump is to house most of the equipment out of site. The only equipment you see in my tanks are the VorTech.
