oh ya u can overdose ! all purple up is, is a calcium supplement. and u should get enough calcium with regular water changes. only add stuff if u have corals that are depleting your supply. every day dosing will lead to bad things if u have a calcium test whats the reading? if u dont have one get one!

It was at 380 before purple up. After dose it was at 440. No corals yet just trying to get some coraline alage.

Retest your calcium tomorrow, post where the numbers are.
If your at 440, then don't add anymore until that number changes.
And you should balance your alkalinity with that. Your alk level should be about 4 meq/L (11dkh)
Both numbers are high, but that's balanced. Without corals I'd aim for 420 as my calcium level.

How often do you test you calcium? does calcium drop down fast?

I wouldn't let the calcium go over 450 or you may have a tough time getting the levels right when you want to add corals. I think it says on the bottle that you have to have coraline algea in the tank for the product to work. I've tried it and I think good old fashioned blue lighting, clean water and proper levels does a better job of growing it. There was a place that sold 'grunge' to get coraline started - try a google search. That or ask a friend to scrape their tanks and siphon some out for you. :)

Well one of 2 things is gonna happen. Either tomorrow when you test it will still be 440 and that's fine. OR it will be back to 380. If it drops like that, don't add more it won't matter. If it drops like that, then you need to test and add magnesium for the calcium to remain in solution.
Summary...
440 =fine
it drops=go out and buy mag test kit and mag supplement.

I will do that....Thanks

that purple up is not a good source of calcium. i would suggest not using it any more. i've heard of people having algae issues from it. if you want to raise calcium levels you should look into a good 2 part buffer like b-ionic.

I agree with MR X a good to part will go a lot farther in getting your calcium levels inline and not cause algae issues.
only add what you can test for though. if calcium gets to high it can bind together and cause it to precipatate back into the tank and cause problems.

But you guys are assuming he's trying to up his calcium. As far as raising calcium then yes a 2 part works better, but many hobbiests swear by that purple up. Now granted it does raise calcium levels, but that was not the reason the OP added it.
I have never used it, but I am wondering if they have a nice mix of something or other that might actually work.
My tank took 3 months to start showing dots of corraline, and the people who use PU swear they see results in less than a month.

But if the calcium level does stay at 440, then it would be dangerous to add more,

purple up is made to raise calcium though and promote coraline algae there is no other reason to add it to a tank.
plus there is this LOL
It was at 380 before purple up. After dose it was at 440. No corals yet just trying to get some coraline alage.

the reason why i got is....my tank has been running for 5 months with a single fl bulb and my rock has just a little color to it...so i got a t-5 light fix. and add the PU to speed up the process. I will check my cal. levels and add some every now and then .not going to waste it.

Before a couple of months ago, I thought it was only calcium sold as a gimmick, so as I read the instructions, they are very clear on their labeling to test calcium and not to dose with calcium, and that it will infact raise calcium, but there are also a bunch of other ingredients in the way of elements. Now as I said, I never used the stuff, but I know in my own tank my calcium has always been around 420 and it took a while to start seeing spots on the glass and over flows.
But to hear people talk, they swear they have coralline within weeks.
I don't know though...

Oh and AugustWest brings up a good point. Coralline will not appear out of nowhere. If you have not introduced it to your tank, you will never see it.
I bought a bunch of snails with coralline and also some nice pieces of rock.

I personally add PurpleUp to my tank and it really does work. I had a very small amount of coraline in my tank and I began adding PurpleUp. I did watch my levels as the instructions say and I also started to dose Magnesium (and tested for it) when my Calcium readings were staying low. In just a month I have the one piece of rock that had the tiny amount on it almost covered in awesome looking pink/purple coraline and it is also starting to spread to my overflow and other rocks.
I also have never had any problems with nuisance algae since I've started using it!!
