Ok, I have no QT tank...have a 225g tank...is a 10 gallon tank too small to be a qt?
I have an empty 5g and a 10g about to be emptied (were freshwater) Just thought I may be able to use one for a QT tank.
If not, what is the smallest anyone would recommend for a qt???

The smallest tank you should use for a QT is the largest one you can afford and maintain introducing a parasite or bacterial infection into a DT you size is a heavy price to pay for not going with a first rate QT a tank your size will give you the opportunity to introduce larger size fish hence the need for a larger size QT to isolate then before introduction. Bigger in this case is not only better it is optimal

OK, so in other words...don't bother with the 5 or 10g's....I just have too many FW tanks, and I eliminated my 2 smallest...just thought I could use them for something.
How long do you keep new fish in QT?, and In your opinion, what would be a good size?

Of course; the bigger the better. A 20 gal works with most fish, a 29 gal is even better (and a 55 is better still.). You can usually find one on Craig s List at a real good price.

You question on how long to keep a fish in QT may indicate you need to do a little homework on setting up and maintaining a QT and how to utilize it for a hospital tank if need be and how to recognize a problem arising. I say this with all due respect. I know you are smiling Sir Q

I have done research, BUT the one thing I am finding is that research, forums, and peoples overall experiences differ. Sooooo I was mainly asking an "opinion" question....I will no longer rely solely on one source of info., I have been misled costing me some money, and I truly value the advice "real people" with "real experience" have to offer. Also, my book doesn't mention sizes of qt's, and as I said before, just want some experienced opinions.

I don’t know anyone who would tell you that a smaller qt is better then a bigger one the more water the less drastic water parameter swings for one volume is and will always be to your advantage in this hobby and i must say again the bigger the better

I realize with fish, both fw and sw bigger IS better, i have small & large fw tanks, and it is easier to care for the larger ones. Nobody has actually suggested a size at all for a qt..all I wanted to know is if something that I already have would work..Apparently they won't, so I will look into getting a tank suitable to be a qt....
thanks for your help, Just trying to get the right stuff the 1st time...I wish I had known about this site before I started.....

LOL my friend along with good advice you will also get a good growth of thick skin. The advice you get here may seem opinionated at first and for the most part it is. But it is given in the best interests or our hobby I think if everyone of us had a choice it would be for the biggest QT we could get

I just recently had to upgrade my QT, Im in the large angel phase, and they're a delicate nightmare if not quarantined properly. I used to use a 15 gallon, which worked great until I wanted bigger fish. a 10 gallon works as long as theyre small fish being quarantined, obviously you wont put a 5" fish in a 10 gallon, it couldnt even turn around. However when I went shopping for my new QT I found the perfect deal at Petsmart, I got a 20 gallon long for 24.99 which hosted my 5 1/2" blueface angel for 3 weeks with no prob. I would reccomend a larger QT and for 25$ its def worth it, it costs about half of a fish, much better to be safe then sorry. But let me know what you end up doing, it is all based on opinion, but the point of a QT is to keep the newly STRESSED fish as comfortable as possible. So think about it

It really depends on what kind of fish you're trying to keep. If you want to keep fish like clowns, then a 10gal is enough. But if you want to keep tangs, keeping one in QT, in a 10gal tank for 3-4 weeks does more harm than good. I've been using a 29gal QT and I've kept tangs, triggers, and a dogface puffer for 4 weeks at a time. One at a time of course, not all at once. So I'd say a 29gal QT should be enough for most fish. But the bigger the better.

Just not sure where I would put another tank....I have a 225g SW, 54g SW, 29g FW and a 16g FW in this one room...LOL...a 55g fw and a 46g fw in another room...just eliminated the 10 & 5g fw tanks in my bedroom.
If I add the qt, I think I need at least a 29g since I do have tangs and butterflies....I want the qt to help them, not stress them out....this needs to be added to my LONG list of what else I need...lol
