I am about to add fish again to my tank but I can't set up a quarintine tank.
what's the next best thing I can do?
The best thing you can do is wait until you can set up a QT then add more fish to your tank. Unless you are willing to take the risk of introducing a parasite or something else to you DT that you dont want there.

There isn't anything else you can do to protect the fish you already have.

I would have to disagree... you could also do a freshwater dip which would help a lot... not as much as a proper qt (the best)... but still pretty good.

Hmm. But I dont think a fresh water dip is going to take care of ICH is it?

If one cannot set up a qtine tank to receive New fish - how would one set up a qtine/treatment tank after something breaks out? You might risk loosing all the new fish + all the old ones.

A freshwater dip will most likely not remove all of the parasites. Also, I would imagine the freshwater dip is very stressful for the new fish and stress decreases its ability to fight off illness. (just a guess here on my part).

Both are excellent guesses, and IME both are absolutly correct

I only risk the stress of a dip in very VERY severe infestations where the fish is just covered with parasites, and is breathing (respirating) near hyper levels. Only in the advanced stages of ich infestation where the risk of fish death is growing quickly by the hour - do I risk any dip. The parasites dig under the fishes slime coat & scales to feed - and because they are in the flesh of the fish, a dip does no good anyway. They emerge from this depth in the fish and cyst (multiply) and further the infestation. A dip only affects any parasites on the fishes skin surface, and surface features of the gills - and this is a minority of the total number that are hosting on the fish.
I prefer qtine treatment with hypo asap after positive ID of the parasite.

another thing not mentioned here is getting the FW ready for the dip. One has to take certain steps in preparing the water nd the fish being treated. Some of the posters are correct when saying it's not a good idea. I would also get the QT set up before doing anything else or your next thread will read "ich, please help"
Just a little free advice.

Well... I know what you mean. But: just tell them that one accidentely introduced parasite or something could kill all the inhabitants of the tank. And the chances aren't very low, either.

okay ck.... let me ask you this, who is buying your fish, you or the parents? If the Parents (as I'M) tell them it is very important that this is done. You buy a fish and it may introduce a parasite in your tank and more than likely killing them. Now..... was it worth it? Fresh dips kill more fish than healing them.
Look on craigs list for a 10-20 gallon tank, nothing special and cheapy lights, thats all you need to be safe. Not really fare for you or your parents to be spending this money and possibly killing your critters right? my daughter (12) knows the importants of QT'ing the fish first so that should be telling ya something. :)

You could even use a rubbermaid container for your QT.
You two are right on target... putting fish through qt is really important and all that is needed is a cheapy tank, lights, and some filtration.. nothing expensive or specific.

+1 on the QT - you can get a 10gal setup on craigslist for $20-40 or new from a store for like $50-60

You can get a NEW 10g tank for $12.00 and use a NEW little HOB filter (14.00 tops)...some NEW PVC pieces ($1.50) for a new fish to cozy up to so they feel safe. Let it cycle. Also...Paint the bottom back (on the outside) in case you have to treat the new fish, live rock and sand create problems and a glass bottom looks bad to me.
