Quest to improve water clarity

I've recently become dissappointed with the water clarity in my tank, and I've been upgrading the cheap equipment I started out with, which is beginning to help. I'm looking for input if you guys think I'm on the wrong track.
It's a 75 gal tank, up for about 1.5 yrs, 1 Y Tang, 2 clownfish, 2 cardinals, 1 coral beauty, 1 goby and a hermit crab.
The water is brown looking, it's not clear. I have brown growth in the tank, haven't had any different colored growth or algea than brown for 6 months.
I do 10 gal water changes at least once a week.
I've got a Magnum 350 canister pump filter and an Aquac Remora protein skimmer. I just got the aquac a couple weeks ago to replace a seaclone that sucked, so it has some catching up to do.
I just ordered a carbon canister for the magnum 350 so I can run carbon periodically, and I have also ordered a uv filter. I haven't gotten either yet, but should have them in a couple days. From what I read it sounds like these two things should help kill the brown growth.
What I want to know is will I want to run the carbon and the uv all the time, or just run them until things clear up and then turn them off? That is my plan, I have read that it might not be a good idea to run both all the time.
Anyways I'll post updates as I try this out to see what happens, maybe it'll help somebody out who is searching these forums down the road.

In my opinion it's best to run carbon for 48 hours whenever you notice a green/yellow tint to the water.
Use new carbon each time.

check ur phosphates, if they are even traceable, use phosban or some type of phosphate remover, also clean out ur canister, that may be it. also, add more LR

yeah I do want to get more live rock, so that does help huh? sweet. thanks for the tips so far. I should clean out my canister as well now that you mention it. I have a tough situation for water access at the office here, so I don't clean things like I should sometimes.

well I just realized this is in the wrong forum, but here's an update
I got the carbon filter yesterday, and installed it into the Magnum 350. By the way, they don't mention that the cap for the cartridge likes to stick to the Magnum cap, so it's pretty easy to make a nice mess with the carbon.
I came back to the office today and wow, the water is very clear compared to just 18 hrs ago. Wow. I just got the UV filter today and haven't even opened it up yet, but I am thinking i might not even need it.

Well, all I can say is that my water cleared up so much that I got an RMA for the UV filter. I guess I'd rather have 100 bucks right now rather than that since my water looks great now just from carbon.
I have hooked up my webcam now that it's clear again, if you guys can get it to work it can be viewed at:

I find the Java applet option works best for Firefox users. Sign in as guest if interested. The cam is right up next to the glass, on the left end of the tank looking across/down
