ive been reading this post and i find what yall are saying to be interesting but i have a question. i have a qt to but i dont have a fish in ther, i this bad?or is it ok but you just perfer to do that
I keep a fish in there to make sure it is an established tank and that it keeps "cycled". I guess you can keep an QT tank "cycled" by ghost feeding it and testing. I find that keeping a little fish in there helps me remember to feed the tank and keep up on maintenance. Now if anything goes wrong in the DT, I know that the QT is ready for whatever.

I don't. I move some bioballs from my dt's sump to a hob filter when I need the qt. That seems to work fine unless I am quarantining a particularly large fish.
